Taiga Dorama ga Umareta Hi (The Day the Taiga Drama was Born) (4 Feb, 2023, NHK) is a TV special depicting how NHK's beloved historical epic "Taiga" drama was born. In 1962, Yamaoka Shinpei (Ikuta Toma), a young assistant director in NHK's entertainment department, was suddenly ordered by the head chief, Narushima Teiichiro (Nakai Kiichi) to "make the biggest entertainment period drama in Japan that can compete with movies!" Together with his superior and TV producer Kusuda Kinji (Abe Sadao), he was tasked to recruit huge stars from the movie and theater world to appear in this project. However, for some reason, movie stars cannot just readily appear on the small screen... Nevertheless, they visit movie star Sada Keiji (Nakamura Shichinosuke) to ask him to appear in the drama, but they are unable to get an answer. For the meantime, a story was chosen, and it was a popular novel serialized in newspapers called, "Hana no Shogai"...
This special shows the struggles of NHK crew to create the very first Taiga drama. In the process, they also developed groundbreaking recording methods that continues to be used to this day. Their hard work paid off since it went on to become the much-beloved entertainment institution that is still captivating audiences, serving as a Sunday night TV habit for generations to come.
Also starring: Matsumoto Honoka, Kurashina Kana, Yamato Yuma, Tomosaka Rie, Issey Ogata, and Ito Shiro.

Ii Naosuke's life is depicted with a mysterious woman, Takajo, (Awashima Chikage) in the background. He is supported by his right hand man, Nagano Shume (Sada Keiji) who got drawn into Naosuke's inevitable fate into politics.

Here are the notes for the SP "Taiga Dorama ga Umareta Hi":

Hana no Shogai (The Life of a Flower) is the first Taiga drama (called "large-scale historical drama" at the time of broadcast) that was shown on NHK from April 7, 1963 to December 29 of the same year. Based on the historical novel "Hana no Shogai" by Funahashi Seiichi, which was serialized in the newspaper Mainichi Shimbun from 1952 to 1953, it depicted the life of Ii Naosuke, a great elder of the Tokugawa shogunate at the end of the Edo period. Like most Japanese television programs of the time, the picture was in black and white and the sound was in mono. It had 39 episodes, and garnered an average audience rating of 20.2% for all episodes and a maximum of 32.3%.
Unfortunately, only the entire first episode and parts of the 37th episode, which was the scene of the "Incident Outside the Sakuradamon", have survived. Recordings of other episodes no longer exist.
