Ep. 3: "Queso Fundido and Pipian Verde of Minami-Azabu, Minato Ward, Tokyo"

Episode Synopsis. Inogashira Goro (Matsushige Yutaka) was in Minato Ward to visit an international school center where many foreign children were playing. Client Yamamoto Catherine (Toyota Ellie) wants Goro's services in looking for antique toys as gifts for the kids from their home countries. When the topic of lunch was brought up, Goro heard the word "lasagna". It made Goro hungry so he immediately set out to look for an eatery. But Goro was picturing something Western in mind, so a basement Mexican restaurant, "Salsita" caught his eye. The menu was literally foreign and strange to him but he decided to try it anyway. He was welcomed by a staff (Watabe Gota). Goro tried to visualize the dishes described in the menu but couldn't imagine them at all. But he left it to luck, and went for the items he never tried before: sopes, Yucatan style chicken-lime soup, zucchini pudding, queso fundido, pipian verde...

Mexican Food Glossary for this episode:
Sope (also picaditas, pellizcada, garnacha). Corn dough topped with vegetables, meat, refried beans, cheese, lettuce, onions, and salsa.
Nopal. Edible cactus used in Mexican cuisine. They can be eaten with eggs, meat, tacos, salads, cheese, or simply as a side vegetable.
Chorizo. Pork sausage. Mexican style is made with native peppers.
Queso Fundido. A dish of melted cheese and spicy chorizo often served flambe-style.
Pipian Verde. Sauce with a green tint, made from pumpkin seeds, green chiles and tomatillos.
Mole Poblano. Considered the "national dish", it's a dark sauce made from chili peppers and chocolate, served with chicken, pork or other meat.
Cochinita Pibil. A traditional Mexican slow-roasted pork dish from the Yucatan peninsula. Meat is marinated in citrus juice, with anatto seed, and roasted while wrapped in banana leaf.

What Was Actually Said:
Zucchini Pun. In the caption describing Zucchini Pudding, it said, "Everyone will say, "Sukki ni~" (which sounds like "zucchini" or "I like").

Mexico Pun [メッキメキ]. Goro made a pun on "Mexico". Since they pronounce it as "Mekishiko" and "Mekishikan" (Mexican), he said "Mekimeki" [メッキメキ] (extremely).

The "Three Kingdoms" Reference. When he said that the pudding still tasted good even when it was no longer hot, Goro said, "死せる孔明生ける仲達を走らす" or "The dead Zhuge Liang scares away the living Sima Yi". I'm not so familiar with this legend, whether the great Chinese warrior Zhuge Liang was dying or already dead, or was a metaphor for "defeat". But what I know was during a battle, Zhuge had only a few men left, so he tricked the enemy led by Sima Yi into thinking that Zhuge's army was still strong and confident, and ready to fight. So Sima Yi ordered his men not to attack, and fled instead. When they realized they have been fooled, they went back but found that reinforements had already arrived to help Zhuge's army. So what Goro meant was, just when you thought the pudding doesn't taste good anymore, it still had some "fighting spirit" left.
