Ep 2: "One-Person Buffet of Kyodo, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo"

Episode Synopsis. Inogashira Goro (Matsushige Yutaka) was in Setagaya waiting at a tennis court for a client (Owada Baku) to finish playing a match with friends. Much to his chagrin, Goro who is not much into ball-based sports, obliged the client's request to practice swinging the racket... After their meeting, Goro managed to follow a somewhat vaguely drawn map towards Kyodo station. He felt hungry after experiencing relief from reaching the endpoint of the map. However, he was at a residential area with no shop within sight. By chance, he saw a sign outside a usual looking detached house. It read "Macina Mecina", a shop that offers buffet meals. Out of his "hunger's curiosity", he entered and got ushered in by the proprietress (Ishino Yoko). Goro began to enjoy the real pleasure of a buffet feast, determined to go over and taste each and every dish...

Kyodo, Setagaya Ward. Located in the central part of Setagaya, it is mostly a residential area with narrow alleyways and one-way streets. Nearby places to visit are Kinuta Park, Hasegawa Machiko Art Museum, Setagaya Art Museum, and Setagaya Hachiman Shrine

Baikingu or Viking [バイキング]. It's what the Japanese call an eat-all-you-can-buffet. The origin of the name comes from the first all-you-can-eat restaurant in Japan, called "Viking". In 1957, the president of the Imperial Hotel wanted a restaurant put up in the new wing of the hotel to be inaugurated the following year. He instructed chef Murakami Nobuo, who got his training from Ritz Hotel in Paris, to come up with a smorgasbord theme, which the president encountered from a previous trip to Denmark. So in 1958, the first buffet restaurant in Japan was born. It was supposed to be called "Smorgasbord" but the name was too difficult for the Japanese to pronounce. So they named it after the 1958 Hollywood movie "The Vikings" (that featured a sumptuous Viking feast) which was showing at a nearby theater at that time. The theme became very popular and other restaurants followed suit. So the name "Viking" evolved to mean "buffet" service to this day.

Zakkoku Kome [雑穀米]. A mixture of various rice grains.
Ishiko Dashi [いりこ出汁]. Stock made from dried sardines.
Saba Shioyaki [サバの塩焼き]. Mackerel grilled or fried, seasoned with salt.
Nasu Miso [なす味噌]. Eggplant Miso.
Ganmoni [がんも煮]. Also Ganmodoki [がんもどき]. Deep fried tofu with bits of vegetables.
Guriin Aspara [グリーンアスパラ] or "Green Asparagus". They call it "green" to differentiate it from white asparagus.
Tebamoto [手羽元]. Drumette or first segment of a chicken wing.
Hakusai no atsasuke [白菜の浅漬け]. Chinese cabbage with light dressing.

Maffe (also mafe or maafe). It's a stew or sauce common in West Africa. It uses ground peanuts or peanut butter/paste, meat (lamb, beef, chicken) tomatoes, and vegetables.
