Ep. 5: "Chicken Rice and Soupless Noodles of Yongle Market, Taipei, Taiwan"


Episode Synopsis. It is Goro's (Matsushige Yutaka) second day in Taiwan. On this day, he will research on Taiwanese products for the upcoming trade exhibition in Paris. He goes to the National Traditional Arts Center in Yilan County. There, he finds all sorts of good ideas for the exhibition: glassware, tea utensils, brushes. He also tries candy-coated tomatoes being sold there. At a tea house, Goro encounters a young entrepreneur Liu Shinichi (Mizuma Ron) who gives him a tip on where to go and find more Taiwanese goods. "Go to Dinghua Street". Goro takes his advice and visits the old warehouse district at Dihua Street in Taipei. The exotic items there made Goro hungry, so he goes on a food-hopping adventure around Yongle Market. He chooses an eatery called "Yǒnglè Xiǎochī" and asks for a meal of Taiwanese street food. Next he tries a stall called "YuanWei LuRou Fan". Not fully understanding the Chinese menu, he takes a plunge and orders unknown dishes with weird sounding names: "Dried Noodles" and "Sewage Soup". Lastly, craving for some sweets, he buys douhua (bean curd snack) at "Guzao Wei Douhua". There, he encounters another lone wolf like himself, Wulang (Winston Chao), eating quietly in a corner. The two men eye each other curiously...

The National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA) [國立傳統藝術中心] or Guólì Zhuàntǒng Yìshù Zhōngxīn. Goro visited this place to research on Taiwanese products and folk arts, and where he bought candied tomato sticks and had traditional tea. Yongle Market [永樂市場] at Dihua Street [迪化街]. In Japanese, they pronounce these places as "Eiraku Ichiba" (Yongle Market) and "Tekiga-kai" (Dihua Street). Dihua St. is an important trade center where one can find "Taiwanese products and produce such as Chinese medicinal herbs, fabrics, incense materials, and for the post-processing of Taiwanese tea." Yongle Market is a building, housing fabric shops and the wet market. In this episode, Goro walks along Dihua Street and sees some karasumi (dried mullet's roe which is a delicacy of Nagasaki, Japan and Taiwan) and Edible Bird's Nests (which are used in Chinese cuisine especially in Bird's Nest Soup). Guest actors in this episode. The young man in this episode was portrayed by Mizuma Ron, an actor who was born in Dalian, China; he and his family migrated to Japan and he grew up in Osaka. Winston Chao (a well-known Taiwanese actor, made famous for his roles in Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet" and "Eat Drink Man Woman") shows up in a cameo appearance at the end of the episode. He stars in the Taiwanese version of "Kodoku no Gurume", called "Gūdú dì Měishíjiā" [孤獨的美食家] produced by Youku. His character is the Chinese version of Goro, named Wulang [伍郎], wearing his signature outfit of beige jacket with brown leather backpack. Lu Rou Fan
[魯肉飯]. Both Goro and Qusumi misread this as "fish meat (gyoniku) rice". It's actually Braised Minced Pork on Rice. Acc. to Chinese wiki, the correct spelling of this dish is [滷肉飯]. Soupless or Dry Noodles or Gan Mian
[乾麵]. These are noodles cooked and mixed with oil and then dried. Then, they're boiled in hot water, and mixed with other ingredients, and served without soup. In Wuhan, China, theirs is known as hot dry noodles which are served with spicy condiments. In Japan, the name also means "dried noodles" (Ganmen), but such a name refers mostly to the rehydratable raw noodles inside ramen cups and packages, hence, Goro's confusion. Chicken Gizzard Soup or Xiàshuǐ Tāng
[下水湯]. In the Chinese language, [下水] has several meanings including "water" and "internal organs of animals for food, some areas specifically refers to the stomach and intestines" but in Taiwanese, it refers specifically to poultry offals (chicken, ducks, etc). Of course, as shown in this episode, [下水] in Japanese is "gesui" or dirty water, that is why Goro is reluctant about ordering it. (info/pic: taiwanlanguage, zh.wiki)

Douhua
[豆花]. It is the short form of doufuhua [豆腐花]. "It is a Chinese snack made with very soft tofu. It is also referred to as tofu pudding and soybean pudding." The Taiwanese version is served either hot or with ice, along with toppings like nuts, azuki beans, tapioca, mung beans. (info/quote: wiki) (pic: digwow)

Dalu Mei
[大陸妹]. A species of lettuce from China, its official name is "Fushan woju" (or Fukuyama Lettuce) [福山萵苣]. It is a mystery as to why Taiwanese called it "Mainland Girl" or "China Girl" (literal translation); in this episode, Goro read it as "Mainland (China) Little Sister". A theory goes that when this lettuce was first introduced in Taiwan, it was labeled as "Mainland (China) A Vegetable" [大陸A菜]. People then later on misrepresented it as "大陸妹" or Mainland Girl. Another theory (albeit an offensive one) is that these lettuce were earlier smuggled from the mainland so they were nicknamed "China Girl" which is said to be a derogatory name for prostitutes (who were smuggled from China to Taiwan or Hongkong).
