Mamagoto (Summer-Fall 2016, NHK) is based on a novel by Matsuda Hiroko. Onchi Eiko (Ando Sakura), the hostess/owner of snack bar Amour, located in the outskirts of a fictional town named Sachikawa in Chugoku region, suddenly finds herself having to take care of a stout, five year old boy named Daiji (Koyama Harutomo). Daiji's mother, Shigeko (Usuda Asami) is Eiko's friend whom she has not seen for a long time. Shigeko, with Daiji, suddenly showed up, asking Eiko to look after her son because she has to go off alone somewhere for work. Eiko absolutely refuses because she "hates kids the most". However, Shigeko ran off, leaving her child behind so Eiko has no choice but to look after him. Taking care of a child brings back sad and bitter memories for Eiko, who is adamant to live alone for the rest of her life. Daiji's innocence and hearty appetite also prove to be a burden for Eiko who is used to only taking care of herself. Moreover, troubles come her way ever since she was forced to look after the boy: a loan shark (Sugimoto Tetta) suddenly shows up, demanding Eiko to pay him money that Shigeko had owed him; Daiji causes a serious accident in her shop; people from the child's welfare office appear, looking into child's situation... However, Daiji is also a cheerful and kind boy, and so Eiko cannot help but become attached to him...
