Featured Food Literature
(with above book covers from left to right):

"Gokudo Meshi Vol. 5" 『極道めし 5巻』by Tsuchiyama Shigeru (Futabasha Publishers). For a synopsis, go to mangahelper. In this particular scene in the manga, one of the inmates had been describing the "sukiyaki-gyudon bowl" he had come up with. He was about to eat a delicious bowl of gyudon at a shop when his angry wife (girlfriend?) came to fetch him. Apparently, she had prepared sukiyaki for him at home so she dragged him back to their apartment. But they ended making love instead, and slept in their bed. Afterwards, the man wakes up, and remembers the gyudon that he failed to eat a while ago. So instead of eating the sukiyaki as is, he improvised and turned it into gyudon-style instead.

"Yoru wo Machinagara" 『夜を待ちながら』(While Waiting For the Night) by Kitakata Kenzo (Gentosha Inc.). The author is known for his hard boiled stories. The synopsis in the episode says: "Taxi driver Hamada Eiji, 38 years old. A man who lives his life only at night. Things begin to move after reuniting with one woman. A Kitakata world of hard boiled literary work at full throttle." The official synopsis says: "One day, a woman has come inside the cab of taxi driver Hamada Eiji. Gazing at her from the rear-view mirror, a feeling of nostalgia came over him. She uttered, I want to know the real reason why my brother was killed. Four years ago, Hamada's wife and friend were killed. It was the price for doing away with crime... Discarding the recurring feelings in his heart, the man once again squeezed the trigger of his Colt Python..." Based on my understanding of this book, Hamada lived a life of crime in the past along with two colleagues, Tateno and Suzukawa. He and Suzukawa left that life behind and chose to live a straightforward life. Hamada worked as a cab driver at night while Suzukawa set up a business selling prosthetic legs. During his days-off, Hamada would spend it cooking at home or fishing. He lives humbly with his daughter, Natsuko. His wife Ayako was killed four years ago, as well as Tateno. One day, Tateno's sister Kanako came to him, and wanted to know the reason behind her brother's murder. Tateno also seemed to have left some big money behind. Once again, Hamada and Suzukawa break open the door of their past in order to know the truth...

"Jidaiya no Nyobo" 『時代屋の女房』(The Wife of Jidaiya) by Muramatsu Tomomi (Kadokawa Co.). A famous novel published in 1982, and was made into a movie in 1983 (Official EN title: "Time and Tide"). For an overview of the movie's plot: nytimes. Here is my understanding of the plot: Yassan, a 35 year old bachelor and owner of the antique shop "Jidai-ya", falls in love with a woman named, Mayumi. This woman had suddenly arrived at his shop one day, with her pet cat Abe-san. They began living together like husband and wife. From time to time, Mayumi (who seems to have a secret life that Yassan respects and does not pry into) would leave and not come back for a day or even more. While waiting for her, a lonesome Yassan interacts with his friends and fellow shopkeepers. The story also depicts the humaneness and lives of the people and shop owners living in Tokyo-Oimachi. In the book excerpt read in this episode, Yassan is at an izakaya with his friend, who is only known as "Master" (owner of coffee shop, Sunrise), and speaks in an Osaka accent. The old man, whom they call "oyaji" is the owner of the izakaya "Tonkichi", and was the one who prepared the Pork Offal Stew for them. Oyaji made a pun about the name of the shop, "Jidaiya". "Jidai" meaning "era" or "times". Since it is an antique shop, it is left behind in the times (jidai).
