Ep. 1: "Spicy fried meat and bean sprouts of Kiyose City, Tokyo"

Episode Synopsis.

Inogashira Goro (Matsushige Yutaka) arrives in Kiyose, Tokyo for his appointment with an eyewear shop owner (Shiga Kotaro). However, the client is at the moment playing mahjong so Goro goes to the mahjong parlor instead and waits for him to finish. Afterwards, the two proceed with their meeting which ends on a good note, if only the owner had not insisted on making Goro try out some of his flashy sunglasses. Later, Goro aims to satiate his hunger by looking for an eatery near the station. He tries out "Miyuki Shokudo", a simple greasy spoon that offers affordable set meals with hefty amounts. Despite his hunger, Goro is taking a bit of time deciding what to order as he gets lost in the shop's varied menu: written on numerous strips of paper, attached all over one wall...

Kiyose City. It's located on the outskirts of Metropolitan Tokyo (that is why Goro said, "So this is still Tokyo, huh?"), lying alongside Niiza and Tokorazawa Cities of Saitama Prefecture on the north. Due to its increasing population, this former town was declared a city in 1970. It has lots of green terrain which accounts 46% of its area. Agriculture is its main industry, mostly vegetables like carrots and spinach.

Mahjong. A game originally from China, similar to the Western card game rummy. Commonly played by four players, it is "a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance." Japanese mahjong (also called "riichi mahjong") is said to have started out as a simplified version of the Chinese game but "additional rules were (later on) adopted to increase the complexity". As of 2010, mahjong in Japan is reportedly the most popular table game with "around 7.6 million mahjong players and about 8,900 mahjong parlors in the country." These parlors are said to have earned 300 billion yen in 2008.

Here are other food mentioned but wasn't shown:
Mapo Ramen. Spicy ramen noodles in the style of the Szechuan Mapo Tofu. (pic: appetiteforchina)
Sanma no Hiraki. Split sanma (Pacific saury) and dried. (pic: eshop)
Koya Tofu. Dried tofu that swells to twice its size and have a spongy texture when rehydrated or simmered. It is usually simmered in dashi, but can also be grounded up into tofu meal and flour, or cut into tofu croutons. (pic: japaneseveganeg)

Itawasa. Kamabokoro served with wasabi and soy sauce. (pic: cookpad)

And the dish that Goro was curious about but didn't get to see ^o^:

Miyuki Shokudo's Spaghetti Inaka-fu (Country-style). A blogger posted the above pic when he ate at the featured eatery. It appears to be spaghetti sans sauce, with chopped veggies and meat.

Is there a sly in-joke going on in the scene between Goro and the eyewear shop proprietor? Goro puts on the dark glasses and looks "scary". Matsushige Yutaka was in "Shinya Shokudo" as a yakuza chief, and always wore thin-framed dark glasses (and looked scary!)
