Ep. 8: "Hiding the engagement ring of a rival lover"

Episode Synopsis. A bespectacled emotional young lady arrives at the office of Tada and Gyoten with a preposterous job request. She first asks if they will clean the apartment of a certain female client on a coming Saturday... "That woman's fiancé is my ex-boyfriend..." she explains. "When you clean her apartment, I want you to take her engagement ring and give it to me." Tada is confused. "Isn't that stealing?" he asks. The lady bursts out, frenziedly, "But it is MY ring! I loaned my ex-fiancé money to buy it for me before we broke up!" Tada still refuses to accept the job request. On Saturday, he and Gyoten show up for the said clean-up. However, little do they know, they apparently have a new member in their team...

Engagement rings in Japan. The old "three months' salary rule" is said to be a marketing scheme made up by jewelry manufacturer, De Beers. Nowadays, many Japanese couples consider it a "Showa era" rule. According to a latest survey of some 900 couples married from 2011 to 2012, the average price of their engagement rings was ¥330,300 which is lower than the average three month salary (around 8% of one's annual salary). The article also says wedding costs went down in 2012 "may be due to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake/tsunami." It also shows that the prices of rings bought by couples have been dropping since 2009.

Laughing mushrooms.
Petticoat mottlegill. In Japan, it is called "waraitake" or the laughing mushroom because it is said to contain psilocybin which can "induce wild laughter for 30 minutes to 1 hour".

Opening title sequence. Regarding the drama's title back, director One Hitoshi wrote, "Some part of filming, I left it to other people's care. Such as in the opening sequence. It was filmed by Shibata Go-kun... Only Tada and Gyoten are walking in the town of Mahoro in a backwards manner. Then we'll replay it backwards. It's like 'We are not going against the world but looking at it with a little tilt…' which matches this drama. This idea was from Shibata-kun’s old PV he filmed for a band calledArakajime kimerareta koibito tachi eTo the lovers who are fated to be together” for their song "Back" (2011)... (In the PV) a little boy and a girl are walking in a little town and everything else is moving backwards (To watch the PV, click HERE). It was so wonderful, I wanted to steal the idea someday (lol). But if he films it, it won't be stealing the idea. So I asked him to do it."
