Ep. 10: "The Glass Hammer" Part 1

Episode Synopsis. Serizawa and Aoto attend a meeting with a client, the president of a nursing care service company. They learn that someone had fired a gun at the office of the president and that he received several threatening letters from an anonymous person. Serizawa naturally suggests hiring Enomoto to beef up the security on the top floor of the building where their offices are located. Enomoto comes in to work and recognizes the president as someone he had serviced before. However, the president does not remember him. Unfortunately, before the mystery-solving locksmith could start working on enhancing the security system of the place, the president winds up dead inside his office...

It is Enomoto's final locked room mystery as well as his most challenging case... The president was hit on the top of his skull, resulting to brain hemorrhage. He was lying on the floor, presumably crawling as he died. His door was not locked but no one was recorded entering it from the hallway, according to the footages from a security camera. The only person who could have entered it without being seen was the vice president who was in his own office, two rooms away. Police surmise that he entered it using connecting doors. However, the vice president claims he was taking a nap the whole time. And there seems to be other suspects as well, both seen and unseen. And with his career and reputation on the line, Enomoto still has to face certain hurdles in order to break through this final yet seemingly impenetrable locked room mystery.

Drama Notes:

Ep. 10 Hints:

Since the mystery will not be resolved yet in this episode, there are no clues in the title sequence except for two foreshadowing hints: Enomoto's mug shots with the word 'suspect' under it (Pic 1); and a pair of eyes slowly moving up on the screen which according to some viewers, suggests the upward movement of the window washer's scaffold (Pic 2)

Glass Hammer. "Glass Hammer" (Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co.) was the first book written by Kishi Yusuke, that introduced Enomoto Kei to the world. It was published in 2004 and the following year had won the Japan Mystery Writers Association Award. Kishi wrote more stories about this mystery solving locksmith: "Kitsunebi no Ie" (2009) and "Kagi no Kakatta Heya" (2011) which are both a compilation of several mysteries taken up in the drama.

Nursing Care Robot. Japan is in the forefront of developing a nursing care robot that could assist in transporting patients, a necessary yet back-breaking task for human caregivers. Above pic shows the world's first assisting nurse robot, RIBA in action.

Monkey Helpers. In the US, capuchin monkeys are being trained to assist the disabled. Compared to service dogs, monkeys are perfectly suited for small tasks: scratching an itch, handing the phone or remote control, switching lights on or off, etc.

REM movement behavior disorder. A sleep disorder that involves abnormal behavior while asleep, including actions like twitches, kicking, screaming and jumping out of bed.

Sleepwalking defense. In this episode, a non compos mentis plea will be used to defend the suspect, meaning that he was of unsound mind when he committed murder (while sleepwalking), thereby, cannot be held legally responsible. However, in actuality, 'being of unsound mind' does not fit such circumstances so it is still being debated on what appropriate term should be used to call this kind of defense. Terms like automatism, confusional arousal, sleep terror, and sleep-walking defense are also being considered since each case is not as simple as it sounds and that many conditions must be met before it is classified as one.

Scale model. The scale models used in the earlier episodes are said to be worth around 100,000 yen (approx. $1,200) each. Kenchikumokei is or probably one of the companies hired by the drama to make the miniature rooms. In their blog, they said they were tasked to make the model of the hotel room in Episode 3, taking them 10 days to finish it.

The Last Day. KagiHeya screenwriter Aizawa Tomoko shares her insights as Team Enomoto wraps up filming their scenes together for the last episode: "An atmosphere of Team Enomoto is just as you can see on the screen... Really warm and fuzzy feeling. I’m sure everyone was exhausted but the filming scene was full of smiles and was very nice... " To read more, click on this post.

And from Ep. 11 preview... For next week's final episode, a document on the screen is translated as "...total value of stolen items worth around 3,410,000 yen ($42,625)... utilized... security system and entrance... Security alarm, bullet proof glass... Possible entry into the store was a window in the east side.... No evidence was left behind. ...Security camera and alarm system was... from outside... Culprit took advantage of weakness in the system... It is suspected that it was committed by..."

It had to be said! "...For Kaibutsu-kun (...) I think I got [the special effects ears] since they would have been thrown away anyway. This time, there's something I'm interested in - the architectural models. It had to be said, it just had to! (...) Like the models used for the first and second episode. They won't need them anymore, right? What will happen to them? But then those are expensive. I heard they were over 100,000 yen. Still, one can dream! (laughs) After we're done with them, they aren't needed anymore, right? My place is free... I'm not asking for all of them. I just want certain parts that I'm interested in! (laughs) I can't keep my eyes off them. Art-Director-san, if you're listening to this, I'm thinking of you. I'm counting on you! (chuckles)"

A sense of achievement. "But well, as for today [Jun 18, 2012]. The 10th episode airs today. I think I did pretty good, don't you think? So far. (laughs) But well, there's been a whole bunch of stuff, seriously. Up 'til this 10th episode. I haven't heard anything up 'til now, but I've gotten to know loads of words that I'd never heard of before. Said 'em. Memorized 'em. After all, like for the spider episode (...) the name, what was it? 'Chaco Giant Golden Stripe Knee' or something. (laughs) That was tough. And there were a ton of rarely used words as well. So the first time I read them, I was like, are they deliberately trying to torment me? These are like tongue twisters! That's what I thought. (...) But then again, after making a habit of it for this long, it gets easier to remember. There's a sense of achievement when you finally deliver the lines. Those took the shortest time to memorize. So today's the 10th episode. It's another new side of me again. It's like, so Ohno Satoshi can say this sort of thing, huh? So you may see something new again today. By all means, please watch it..."
