Here are some of the pop cultural references from the movie. Due to TMI, I won't explain much so I'll just link you up with good ole Uncle Wiki so he can do most of the talking. I've also posted some of my own thoughts:

These are no ordinary eggs...

Quotes. At the start of the movie, if you're wondering about the messages that were "written" on the walls, ceiling, and street, they were the quotations that Yukiyo was rattling off in his head. These were quotes came from
Mishima Yukio, Bob Dylan and Ozaki Yutaka.

Sub-culture. Hipsters Doesn't usually go along with the main-stream cultural flow.

Tenga Eggs. For those who are clueless, I know I described it as a 'toy' in the T/N but it's not actually a toy. Nor is it a gadget... It's um...
Just click on this
clip if you're curious to find out.

Nakagawa Shoko. All-around otaku idol and tarento.

Murakami Ryu. Novelist and filmmaker. His "Nagasaki Dutch Village" novel was released in 1992.

TM Revolution. Pop/rock band and trio that's been around since the 80's.

TMR. Stage name of singer and actor, Nishikawa Takanori.

Imawano Kiyoshiro. Japan's legendary rocker.

Suidobashi Hakase. Member of comedy duo "Asakusa Kid." Not much info about him is available in English but he's a protege of director Beat Takeshi. And this is his twitter.

Shimokita. Short for "Shimokitazawa." During their first RL meeting (not the 'chance encounter' they had in the Taico Club musicfest), Yukiyo asked Miyuki out to Shimokita, a hip and happening place for young people. Their meeting place is at Village Vanguard which is Shimokita's most famous store that sells hip items, snacks and cool knick-knacks.

Manga References. Yukiyo mentioned "
Shingeki no Kyonin" and "Saikano." While Motoko mentioned "Boys on the Run" which is a story of an awkward loser guy who learns boxing because (I assume) the girl he likes happens to like his friend... um, who happens to be bigger and stronger than he is (made into a 2010 live action movie).

Collagen food. Japanese women believe(d?) that eating food that contains collagen will give them younger skin.

Nagomu Records. Indie label that produced hip, progressive, alternative, new wave music from '80s to the '00s. 'Nagomu' means 'cool down' or ' chill out.'

Flexi-discs. I really don't understand what makes this different from the usual vinyl records but it's mostly preferred by 'em hipster folks before the compact discs came out.

Shinsei Kamattechan. This is them.

Chai. The so-called 'freakin chai' actually looks yummy.

Free paper. They're like
these. It's for free but distributors earn from it through the ads posted on them.

Twitter Icons. You may have guessed that Miyuki's icon turns out to be a caricature of her boyfriend, Daisuke. And if you look at the ending credits, Daisuke's icon is that of Miyuki as well (so that's why Yukiyo had no clue at all about him). BTW, director One Hitoshi's icon shown is really his own actual
twitter icon.

Other references. Some of the stuff mentioned are based on real media and events:
Natalie, EyeScream, Taico Club Musicfest (the one shown in ep. 1 in the drama and earlier in the movie) and Sense of Wonder Musicfest. (pic: hypebeast)

Moteki. "A sudden boom in one's popularity or appeal." It's a modern term that was nominated as one of Japan's buzzwords of 2010. It is said that one can have three 'moteki' in his lifetime (so far, Yukiyo has had two... so I presume there'll be one more movie?). For me, I think 'moteki' is a state of mind... if you feel and look great at a certain point in your life, and people suddenly noticing it, too, then I think you're in the moteki zone.

Miyuki's words. "I can't grow up with Yukiyo-kun." ... That's exactly what she said. Both I and Danburi don't really get what she meant by it. I guess it's open for everyone's interpretation. Mine is that maybe Miyuki... is so much like Yukiyo (being too emotionally laidback, carefree, an otaku) that she feels too comfortable with him and he might hold her back. Maybe she thinks of him as still immature (this was evident when she saw him freak out). If she's with him, she might not be able to mature (which she probably feels when she's with Daisuke). But that's my guess... What's your opinion?
