Week 13. "I fell in a naraku*" (*hell or theater basement) Part 2

"Well, it must be some kind of fate that we met here..."
Episode Summaries:
Ep. 76. Aki: 'My mom had arrived in Tokyo at a time when there were so many things happening outdoors, such as young people dressed up ridiculously, dancing in the streets and shouting "Soiya! Soiya!"... While pursuing her dream to be an idol, she worked part time at a coffee shop called "Idol" along Takeshita Street in Harajuku, earning 550 yen per hour. The shopkeeper Kai-san treated her like his own daughter...'
The year is 1985. Aki: 'It had been almost a year since Haruko came to Tokyo...' At Coffee Shop Idol, Kai asks Haruko how did her audition (probably for a movie role) go yesterday. "That part of a Sukeban who fights with a yoyo." Haruko says it seemed it was a no go. Kai: "I see. Too bad, that role could have been perfect for you." He is watching a TV show featuring a then new all-girl idol group Onyanko Club, singing their hit song, "Don't Make Me Take Off my Sailor Suit." Kai says to Haruko, "Why are these girls on TV and you're not?" Haruko: "They're just recent, Kai-san." Kai: "But that's the point. No. 6 and No. 9 look questionable. And you're a better singer than No. 4(1)... Well, they're kinda cute though."
Aki: 'In 1985, Onyanko club which was produced with music created by Akimoto Yasushi (founder of AKB48) became a big hit... It ushered in the golden era of amateur stars. It was a difficult time for my mom who came to Tokyo with professional conviction...'
Next, Haruko is seen auditioning for some role. However, the men in the casting panel read her resume, and seem more interested in her hometown. "Iwate Prefecture? What is it famous for? Namahage? Kiritanpo?" Haruko only mentions the famous noodles of Morioka (Wankosoba, Reimen, and Jajamen). Casting guys: "You don't seem amateurish. Your speech sounds interesting. Well, since you're from Iwate, try talking in 'zuzu-ben'(2)." Haruko, after hesitating a bit, is able to utter only an "Oban desu (Good evening)." The men say her time is up and thank her for coming. But Haruko yet tries again. "My mother is doing Ama in the Sanriku coast. It's the Northern Ama that does skin diving fishing, and they're the world's northernmost Amas." It worked. The casting panel find it interesting so they ask her to "Try a little sea diving here. No need to think about it, just do a quick one." She is given another limited time but Haruko again hesitates. She slowly takes off her shoes and climbs on top of the chair. She holds her breath, getting ready to jump in an imaginary sea but she is told that her time is up. "Thank you. Next!"
Haruko narrates, 'I felt ashamed. I relied on my mom whom I hated so much... I relied on those Ama-sans in Sodegahama that I betrayed and ran away from. I relied on them as a last resort... That's how few (of the stuff that she could be proud of) that was with me back then... Not young and cute, wasn't that good of a singer... That's why I practiced really hard. I worked hard on voice training... Went to dance lessons, too. Tried to get a step closer to being a professional... Tried so hard everyday and finally got to Tokyo... And it was a golden era of amateur stars... What bad timing...'
Haruko goes back to work at the coffee shop. Kai still likes to watch the Onyanko Club's TV show and singing along with their songs. Just then, a man in a suit comes in and orders 2 Reska or LeSqua (short for 'Lemon Squash' which "was already outdated for 1985"). He is with a young woman and both sit near the window. He says to his companion, "I was a back-up dancer to Toshi-chan until I was 25 yo. Really, it's true. Those days of 'Harajuku Kiss'(3). Guess how old I am? 46? Nice try, I'm 26. LOL!" Aki narrates: 'This young man with an old face who longed to be like Akimoto Yasushi, will later on become the prominent producer of many idols, Aramaki Taichi.' Haruko who is eavesdropping on him, serves them their orders. Futomaki: "But the program I was on had ended. It was "You, Too, Can Become a Star!", you know it?... Well, I've retired (from being a back-up dancer), and I'm a scout now." Haruko hears that, and suddenly drops the tray she was holding. "I'm sorry!" she exclaims. Futomaki gives his business card to the girl, and says, "I'm Aramaki." However, the girl stands up and apologizes. "My parents are very strict and I can't go nude!" Futomaki: "What? Why say 'nude'...? Wait!" She hurriedly goes out the door. Futomaki wonders what made her think that... but shrugs it off and goes to pay the bill. He leaves afterwards, forgetting that his business card was left on the table. Haruko picks it up and places it in her apron's pocket...
'What?! Mom and Futomaki were acquiantances?' Aki tries to read more but the letter ends with the word "Ijoo (That's it)". '"Ijoo"? Why suddenly end her letter here? Even a "Take care of yourself" or stuff that a normal mother would say... There's none at all!' "What do you think?!"
"I don't like it," says Takuma. Aki is surprised to see him sitting at the dining area (He's polishing amber!!). "Jejeh!" Takuma: "How long are you gonna stay up late?" Aki: "Sorry!" She is about to return to her room but Takuma tells her that he went to see Yui. "Well, I wasn't able to meet with her though..." He gets up to give her a souvenir from Konno Boutique (the shop of Yayoi's husband). "It's their latest clothing." It was a loose fitting pants with a busy pattern.
Aki asks him if he went all the way to Kitasanriku to check on Yui. Takuma: "Yeah. Yui's dad is at a university hospital in Morioka, and looks like they will transfer him to another hospital. Fortunately, his surgery was a success, and he has regained consciousness. However, the after-effects require him to have nursing care. He would still need to be cared for now..." He tells her what Yoshie said to him earlier in the day...
Yoshie: "For that reason, the prospect of recovery is not so good..."
Takuma: "Is that so..."
Yoshie: "I also don't know when Yui will be available (for Tokyo)... Really, of all days, such a timing is..."
"So what are you gonna do?" Takuma suddenly asks Aki.
Aki: "Eh?"
Takuma: "It's okay if you go back home to Iwate. Yui-chan was originally the one who was eager about this, and you're like here because you wanted to escort her." Aki tells him Futomaki has already assigned her as a shadow of Arima Meg. "So you met Futomaki-san. Really~? Shadow of Arima Meg, huh..."
Aki (proudly): "He also adopted the dance move I showed him."
Takuma: "I think it's just a whim, though... He would sometimes do that. He'd suddenly handpick a rookie not because she's popular or has talents... It's to give a member a sense of danger... and to give a sense of 'kamase-inu'.*" (*To look as if one is putting up a fight but actually has no chance of winning)
Aki: "I see..."
Takuma: "Arima has been like this lately (gives the long-nosed 'tengu' hand sign that means 'snob' or 'swelled head')... But I think she'll be fired up starting tomorrow. I'm sure she won't goof off anymore. You still want to be her shadow?"
Aki: "Yes! I'll hang in there a bit more. Because I promised Yui-chan. I'll also try to encourage her to come here, too."
Takuma: "I see. Okay then, I'll plan for that, and try my best, too. Good night~."
The next day Aki finally receives an email from Yui. Yui wrote that she was in the hospital so she was not able to reply. She also said her Dad has been getting better little by little, and soon she will let Aki know if she'll be able to go to Tokyo. Aki: 'Her email was pretty much positive... She even ended it with "Catch a dream ~Yui"... On the other hand, it was quite hard for us GMTs. We seriously practice the dance routines every night at the Hole...'
The GMTs are also tasked to assist the AmeJos in the Hole during their shows: offering them ice packs, water, pushing them up directly onto the stage via a sort of lift, and helping them change into their numerous costumes. During this 'understage' assisting, Aki is still not used to the hectic work and messes up a bit. Sometimes, she would be in the way, and the girls, and even Meg, would shout at her to "Move aside!"...
At the dorm, the girls would also have meetings before going to sleep, that is, if Shiori the Leader has an agenda that needs to be addressed or discussed with them. Aki has also started going to a school for the second semester. Her new school, Asahina School Performing Arts Course, caters to students who cannot regularly attend school, are late or have to leave early due to entertainment work. Aki is seen with a few students in her class, with Ellen, Mana, and Shiori among them.
One week has already passed since Aki had last seen Futomaki. He hasn't yet shown up at the theater. Aki: 'I guess maybe it WAS a whim after all.' (Is it me or is Aki's slouchy posture getting worse in this episode?)
One day, Aki is walking along a street where several mini-food trucks/stalls are set up, each with a clerk attending to customers. "Yes, may I help you!" "Welcome, sir!" "What would you like? Udon? Soba? Or Mamebu?" The last word catches Aki's ear. It was spoken by a woman with an unmistakable Tohoku accent, coming from the Soba-Udon stall. Aki goes to see who it is. And surprise! It is no other than Anbe Sayuri (Uwaah! I miss her!)! They stare at each other in disbelief...
Anbe: "Jejeh?!" Aki: "Jejejejeh!" Anbe: "Jeje?!" Aki: "Jejejeh!" (lol)
(1. The members of Onyanko Club are assigned respective numbers, based on the order that they joined the group; No. 4 = Nitta Eri; No. 6 = Kihara Aki; No. 9 = Nagoya Mika)
(2. Zuzu-ben = derogatory nickname for Tohoku dialect; since Tohoku speakers tend to speak without opening their mouths much, it tends to sound like 'zuzuzu bubu sususu'; Haruko is offended by it because such a name tends to stereotype people of Tohoku as 'lazy' so she refuses to speak it)
(3. "Harajuku Kiss" = 1982 song of Toshi-chan who used to be a famous 'Johnny' idol)
Ep. 77. Aki and Anbe are so happy to see each other. They sit and chat at the back of the stall. While serving her customers, Anbe tells her the difficulties she faced trying to sell Mamebu outside Kitasanriku.
Anbe: "I opened a small shop in a department store in Utsunomiya but it didn't do well... It can't be helped... Even Iwate natives can't quite appreciate Mamebu... If people in Tochigi can appreciate them, then it should be Tochigi specialty."
Aki: "So that's why you're masquerading as a stand-only Soba-ya street stall..."
Anbe: "I was lucky enough to find someone who would sell me this food truck for a reasonable price.... I made the 'noren'(1), and little by little, I aimed for Tokyo... See, Ueno is the entrance to Eastern Japan, right? Once in awhile, someone from Sanriku would happen to pass by... If there's none, I would call out, 'Soba, Udon, Mamebu?' and I'd get to hook 1 in 20 people who'd ask 'What is Mamebu?'... Well, when I can't hook any customers, I'd pretend I made a mistake (she demonstrates by placing mamebu dumpling in a bowl of soba noodles)... I tell them to try and taste it and they think it's good... And so next time, they'd order Mamebu."
Aki: "You're amazing, Anbe-chan. You're doing honest work."
Anbe: "Honest way is the only good trait Tohoku people have... Must do everything the honest way. But still, you'll be an Idol, huh?... I guess you do have Haruko-san's blood after all."
Aki: "It has been a year since the Honki Dori, isn't it?"
Anbe: "That time, you wanted to assure yourself that you'll get a sea urchin on your own... Kitasanriku seems so far away..."
Aki recalls the time when Anbe secretly passed the sea urchin to her. "You had been my 'Ochimusha'(2) all along."
Anbe: "It's 'Kagemusha'(2)... 'Ochimusha' and 'Kagemusha' are completely different. Sorry, it's okay to make a mistake but every time you make a mistake, I'll correct you. (She stands up and points at the pot of Mamebu) You want a bowl?" She gives her a serving.
Aki digs in. 'As usual, I cannot discern the taste of Anbe-chan's mamebu(3)... But it is THIS indiscernible taste that hits the spot for me.' "Ah, I miss this..."
Anbe: "Is it yummy?"
Aki: "It was never really yummy. But it's nice. When it comes to yummy food, Tokyo has a lot of it. Even if this is not really all that great, I will eat it. It's the best!"
Anbe: "Come here any time. I also have a fair number of repeat customers of Mamebu." She sees one of her regular customers coming. "There, you see? Welcome!"
Another surprise! Her regular customer happens to be Taneichi-senpai, ordering "Udon plus Mamebu, half and half." But Aki doesn't see him since she's busy eating her mamebu at the back of Anbe's stall. Taneichi does see her first though, and for some reason, he immediately hides behind the 'noren.' Apparently, Anbe does not know that the two are friends since she already left Kitasanriku before all that happened.
Aki gets up and thanks Anbe for the treat and promises to come again. Anbe wishes her good luck with her work. Taneichi, still hiding, watches Aki leave...
Having tasted something she had missed for sometime, Aki goes back to the dorm in a light-hearted mood. 'However, such feeling was short-lived...' as Aki finds her father's taxi cab parked in front of the training camp.
Later, Masamune is in the living room, looking at the cover of AmeJo's CDs. Aki sits quietly while Shiori serves him some tea. Shiori (to Masamune): "I'm really sorry if I sound too rude but kindly keep it brief. Men are forbidden here for the time being."
So Masamune goes straight to the point. To Aki: "I heard from your Mom. To be exact, even if she and I talked, I still am not convinced. What does this mean, Aki... Entertainment industry? You're the least likely person to get involved in this world (points at the CDs). You were holed up in your room, writing negative poems..."
Aki: "Stop it!"
Then, an excited Ayumi and a pale Mana go down the stairs.
Ayumi: "Leader! Leader! Aki-chan! (Looks at Masamune) Who's he?" Masamune stands up and says: "Hello. Thank you for taking care of my daughter. I'm Aki's father, Kurokawa Masamune..." Ayumi: "Sure, sure sure... More importantly, there's big news! Mana-chan has..."
Mana (in a dazed state): "What should I do... My turn as a shadow has come."
Aki and Shiori: "Jejeh!"
Ayumi: "Mizuguchi-san called up, and says that Narita Rina is not feeling well, and did not show up at the handshake meeting."
Shiori: "Alright~! So you'll start today?"
Ayumi: "Once, he confirms the arrangements, he'll call right away."
Mana (clutches her stomach): "What will I do... My tummy hurts..." She crouches down probably more out of nervousness than pain. The girls ask to call a taxi and all point at a clueless Masamune.
That night, Takuma replaces Narita Rina's nameplate for the time being with that of GMT's Endo Mana... Later the show gets going, and the GMTs try their best to assist Mana. "How many seconds left?" "25! 25 seconds!" They give her water and help her get out of her cheerleader costume. Maybe due to the chaos, she is handed the wrong costume. She's wearing a panda costume instead of the AmeJo military-style school uniform needed for the final performance. But it is too late to change the outfit so Mana had no choice but to wear it. It is also too late for her to go up the stairs so they resort to using the stage lift. "Good luck, Mana!" The GMT girls as usual practice in the Hole while the 'December' song is played onstage.
Meanwhile, Takuma is consulting Futomaki in the latter's office. Seems Takuma is worried that his GMT project is not going well so far. But Futomaki tells him not to worry about it. "Anything can happen in the beginning... think positive, Mizuguchi. Even AmeJo took 4 years before it took off.
Takuma: "But since you said that Yui-chan of the KitaTetsu will likely be the favorite..."
Futomaki: "That sea girl is also interesting, isn't she?"
Takuma: "Aki?"
Futomaki: "It's good that she didn't do away with the accent."
Takuma: "I heard you chose her to be the shadow of Arima Meg."
Futomaki: "Huh? Oh... Yeah, she has been like this lately (He also makes a sign with his fingers indicating 'snob'). Wonder if she has a boyfriend... So quick once they become popular, huh... I had the most interesting time at the Hole, Mizuguchi." He eats the sushi he ordered from "Burai Sushi." Takuma nods and smiles.
Aki meanwhile is still dancing along with her co-members. 'The road ahead maybe steep and I may not know all the members of AmeJo but... surely the effort we give in the Hole will be rewarded... I have no choice but to believe in that.'
After the show, Shiori, Aki, and Mana still in her Panda costume thank the AmeJo girls for the hard work. When they see Arima Meg, they bow their heads and apologize for the snafu that happened. Meg does not say a word and leaves. They go back to the Hole but Mana looks depressed. "C'mon, cheer up," Shiori tells her.
They find leftover sushi at the Hole. Ayumi: "The AmeJos gave some for us!" The girls were about to happily dig in but Mana says, "If there is sushi, it means Futomaki-san (was here) and had seen the show."
The girls realize the implication, and in the spirit of camaraderie, they refuse to eat it, too. Mana gloomily sighs at her bad luck, sits and mutters, "This sucks."
But Aki proceeds to get one sushi, and of course it was the one topped with sea urchin. She eats it with relish. "So good!" The others scold her, "What're you doing!" Aki says she's sorry but it would be a waste if it's not eaten. She invites Mana to eat but she sadly shakes her head. Then, Aki gets a coin from her pocket and hands it to Mana. "Here... I will pay you 500 yen... Because a sea urchin is a cashbox, that's what my Bappa taught me." Ayumi: "Settling it with money is not the point!" Mana, looking like she's about to cry, gets up to leave but Aki has a question for her.
Aki: "Tell us, Mana-chan. How does it feel to be up there?"
Shiori: "Of course-- (pauses)... (To Mana) It's better up there, right?"
Mana nods her head. Aki: "I knew it... No matter how many mistakes you make or how late you go up, it's better than being in the Hole."
Mana: "Yeah, there's also the audience... Being onstage really feels good."
Aki: "Then tomorrow, you'll be able to dance comfortably. And we'll be down here cheering you on." The other girls agree, and join in cheering Mana up.
Finally, Mana nods and smiles. "I understand. It IS my chance, right?"
Kaoruko: "How I wish I could go up the stage, too..." The girls contemplate on trying the lift to go up the stage. "Wonder if it can lift all 6 of us?"
But Takuma, listening all along at the top of the stairs, says, "No, it can't, so don't even think about it." They ask how long has he been standing there. "I was waiting for a good time to come out. Was waiting for some gloomy girl talk to settle down...." He goes down, gets some of the sushi, and eats. "By the way, GMT will not end up in this theater. Right now, the 6 of you are just sorta temporarily borrowing this place and being treated as subs for the AmeJos but... Once all members from 47 prefectures are gathered, you will definitely go on a national tour and then, finally Budokan."
All the girls go, "Jejejeh!!"
Takuma (in between bites of sushi): "That's my conviction. This is the first time I've been entrusted with a project... In other words, I will not quit even if many members drop out. You're GMT up to the last one."
Girls: "Yes!"
Takuma: "I will never give up on you."
Girls: "Yes!!"
Takuma looks at them, and chuckles. "So annoying."
Shiori continues to cheer the group on and tells them to strive harder and "take over the world!" Aki asks her if they can all go eat sushi to celebrate Mana's 'ascension' as a substitute. But as the leader, Shiori says she doesn't have the money to buy sushi. "Then, what about Mizuguchi-san..." But Takuma is once again, nowhere to be found...
Meanwhile in Kitasanriku, the search is on for the 2nd Miss KitaTetsu. At Bar Rias, the guys are discussing about it. Yoshida who doesn't seem to be looking forward to it, looks at the contest flyer, and says "Somehow, I'm not excited~." Again, Sugawara is persuading Kurihara Shiori to take part in the search, and just like last year she is still worrying about her belly fat. And again, just like last year, Yoshida is still irritated with them, and says, "Do you want me to repeat what I said? I said, I'm not excited~!" (lol)
And Sugawara is also once again, trying to persuade Haruko to take part in the contest. "Mother and daughter, you'll be two generations of local idols!"
But Yoshida is not in favor of it. "Even if the age requirement is not strict, there should be a limit. Last year, it was 17... and now, 45..."
Haruko (pissed): "3, 3! I'm 43, okay?!"
Then, Hiroshi comes in. They ask how his father is doing. "Yes, thank God, the worst is already over and he's doing better. He'll be doing physical rehabilitation starting next week." Haruko: "I see! How's Yui-chan?"
Hiroshi opens the door and lets in Yui. It is the first time that she appeared in front of everyone in two weeks.
(1. Noren = the sign curtain hanging at the entrance of a shop)
(2. Ochimusha = defeated soldier fleeing the enemy; Kagemusha = body double; Aki made the same mistake before in Ep. 21)
(3. BTW, Mamebu is a dish of Iwate Prefecture, that has dumplings, walnut, brown sugar, vegetables and tofu and other ingredients; In Week 1, it's been described as having a vague taste, like you cannot tell whether it's salty or sweet)
Ep. 78. Yui stands in front of them, silently. Hiroshi apologizes for making them worry about their Dad and all. The guys of course say that Isao was their teacher, and it's only natural that they all help out. Hiroshi says thank you. Suddenly, an emotionally overwhelmed Ben starts crying. Haruko (to the 2 siblings): "Have you eaten? Are you hungry?"
However, Yui tells Hiroshi that she wants to go home. Haruko sensing Yui is not ready yet to face everyone, tells them that it's okay if they want to leave already. But Yoshida invites Hiroshi to have one drink. "Right! Sit down!" Again, Yui implores Hiroshi: "Let's go home." Her brother tells her to stay for just a short while. Ben meanwhile continues to sob.
Not reading the atmosphere, the guys try talking to Yui. Sugawara: "Have you heard from Aki-chan?" Daikichi: "Oh, we're doing Miss KitaTetsu again this year. (Shows her the flyer) I wish you would win for two consecutive titles." Yoshida: "Yeah, yeah! You should be our Miss KitaTetsu forever!" Yui snatches the flyer and throws it away, and runs out the door. Hiroshi apologizes for his sister and leaves as well.
Haruko scolds the men for their insensitivity. "Let's go over what you did! (To Yoshida) Why did you ask them to stay!" Yoshida: "But you also asked them if they're hungry..." Haruko: "That's because this is a snack bar! If they refuse, then I can't force them, right? (To Sugawara) Why did you have to mention Aki? It's the least topic you should touch on right now! (To Daikichi) And why did you have to deliver the final blow? Miss Kitatetsu? 2 consecutive wins? You think she'll be pleased if you say that? Fools, you're all fools! It's like poking at a boil that's hurting the most. (To Ben who is still sobbing) And for how long are you gonna keep on crying, Ben-san!"
Daikichi: "I see... I wouldn't know since I've never been in such a psychological state..."
Haruko: "Well, it's because I'm originally the 'boil'..."
Others: "Ahh..."
Next morning, Aki is drinking milk while on the phone with her Bappa. Natsu is at her house, with Katsue. "Aki? Not much news from here... Well, Katsue has gotten pregnant. LOL"
Aki's eyes widen and spits out a mouthful of milk.
Natsu gives the phone to Katsue and takes the pregnant cat that she is holding. Katsue to Aki: "Hmm? Cat, it was a cat (Probably the cat's name is Katsue)! Since you've been gone to Tokyo, Natsu has been feeling lonely. I gave her one of my cats. Actually... The cat that I gave her got pregnant, lol... Hmm? Sushi? (To Natsu) Aki is asking if you eat sushi til you're full, how much would it cost."
Natsu: "Is it the ones that go around (or Conveyor-belt sushi)? Or not go around?" Katsue relays the message to Aki, and answers back: "She says the one that goes around." Natsu says 1000 yen would be enough, and if it's not conveyor belt sushi, then it would be 2000 yen...
It's nighttime at the sushi-ten (restaurant), "Burai Sushi" which is right behind Tokyo Edo Theater. Clean-cut Sushi master chef, and head, Umezu is manning the counter. His attendant, Ito welcomes and looks after the customers. One of the customers, a woman whose face we cannot see, is dining alone in one of the tatami-matted cubicles. At the next cubicle, Takuma and the GMT girls arrive and sit. The girls seem intimidated with the aura of the place, and are worried about the price of the food. Shiori: "Hey, Aki, is this really okay?" Kaoruko: "I only have 2000 yen in my pocket." Aki just smiles and gives a thumbs up sign (*shakes head* Oh, Aki...).
Shiori: "Alright then, let's start! Let's toast to one of GMT member's first time as a shadow... who did splendidly well for 5 shows in 3 days!" She pats Mana on the back. Everyone applauds and Mana stands up to address them. "The truth is I thought of going home to Fukuoka (coughs) on the first day that I've messed up... But, Aki-chan said something to defend me. Aki-chan, what was that again?" Aki just raises her glass (only juice for the girls) and shouts, "Kampai!" Everyone: "Kanpai~!"
Ito, the waiter comes to take their order. Takuma asks for the menu but Aki, recalling what Natsu told her on the phone earlier, says to Ito: "Tekitou ni (As you see fit)." The waiter thanks them for the order, and informs Umezu, "They'll kindly leave it to you." The girls, once again, look worried but Aki says not to mind it...
By the way, while all these were going on, the mysterious lady at the next cubicle seems to be observing them through a partition and listening in. Later on, trays of expensive-looking sushi arrive for the GMTs, and everyone cheerfully digs in. After awhile, contentedly full and happy, they're clapping and cheering for Ellen who is up, dancing and singing an Okinawan folk song. Takuma who seemed to have stepped out, comes and tells them to pipe it down. But Ayumi giddily gets up to dance, too. "Yatto sa~! Yatto! Yatto!" Takuma: "I said, quit it! Ah!" Ayumi trips and falls. She seems to be drunk.
Takuma: "By the way, you're a minor, you shouldn't be drinking."
Ayumi: "I'm not a minor! (Everyone goes, "Eh?!") Lol Sorry, I lied about my age. I'm actually 20, going on 21 this year. (Everyone, including Takuma: "Jejejeh!") Jejeeeeh~♬! Compared to AmeJo, somehow, I am totally the so-called 'Saba Idol(1)'." Ellen: "Well, if you can be popular, then it's a win!" Takuma tells them to lower their voices. "You never know who might be listening."
Meanwhile, someone IS indeed listening and it's the Mystery Lady at the next cubicle. She asks Ito who the girls are. Ito: "They're the up and coming idols of Tokyo Edo Theater..."
Over at the GMT party, Mana stands up and says she too has a confession to make. (Geez, have to change the Character Guide again lol; But you should see the Japanese wiki on this drama, it's getting chaotic, seems like fans are scrambling to update the details like everyday!)
Ayumi: "About your real age?"
Mana: "It's not my age... The truth is, I'm not from Fukuoka. (Everyone: "Eh?!") I'm from Saga Prefecture! I'm so sorry! (she bows her head)... 'Fukuoka and Saga are right next to each other and you're in the Fukuoka group. So I think it's better to say you're from Fukuoka,' that's what Hakata Hanamaru(2) had said."
Shiori: "I don't see it."
Takuma: "I see~... So that's why you cough every time you say 'Fukuoka'."
Mana: "Yes, it's not my nature to lie... (To Shiori) Wait, what do you mean, you don't see it?"
Shiori: "No, I mean I don't see the difference, right?"
Mana (stands up and shouts): "Why don't you get it?!"
Takuma: "It's good that you told me before you became popular... C'mon sit down."
Mana: "SAGA AND FUKUOKA ARE DIFFERENT! They're completely different!!"
The others try to calm her down. Meanwhile, Kaoruko and Aki talk about the bill. It seems Aki has finally gotten worried, too (after seeing all the sushi that they ate). She tells Kaoruko that she only has 2000 yen, too. Kaoruko: "What if we borrow money from Mizuguchi-san?"
Aki: "I don't think he has money. I've been observing him for quite a while now... He hasn't eaten the sushi and seems to be drinking shochu but he's been mixing it with water. In the end, he's gonna escape (and leave us the bill)." She looks over at Chef Umezu, who is examining a very sharp knife. Worried, Aki mutters, "Bappa..." She recalls her Grandma's words on the phone: "(When you can't pay for it), then apologize profusely and make up for it by washing the dishes or something." Feeling resigned, Aki (to herself): "Seems that is where it's headed, huh..."
At the other cubicle, Ito informs Mystery Lady that her taxi ride has arrived. She gets ready to leave as the girls change the topic of their discussion. "Aki, who is your favorite actress." Aki instantly answers, "Suzuka Hiromi." Mystery Lady hears it and pauses.
Aki's reply is met with "Eh?!" from the others. Aki asks, "You don't like her?"
Shiori: "It's not that, but isn't she a stuck-up?" (Making the "tengu" hand sign)
Ayumi: "Rumors say when she works, she makes the rookies cry."
Shiro: "Doesn't she live in a castle? lol"
Aki: "I don't know much about her, I only see her old movies on TV."
Ayumi: "She does have a lot of movies!"
Meanwhile, Mystery Lady thanks Umezu for the food and passes by the GMTs' cubicle. Aki catches a glimpse of the lady's profile. "Eh?" While the girls are still talking about her ("She's a famous actress who appears in historical dramas, too;" "I do like her CM about that refrigerator..."), Mystery Lady pauses at the door, and finally comes into view and she happens to be actress, Suzuka Hiromi. She checks her reflection on the mirror, puts on dark shades, and exits the shop. Aki, who finally got a good look on her, lets out a whopping nine "Jehs!"
Takuma asks Waiter Ito for the bill but Umezu tells him that it has already been taken care of. Ito: "The customer at the next cubicle has paid for it a while ago."
Aki hears it and couldn't believe it. 'Yui-chan, I'm in a situation, a major situation... The actress I adore, Suzuka Hiromi was sitting right next to ours, separated by just one partition...' She runs out and goes after her.
"Excuse me, Suzuka-san!" Aki runs in the street and catches up on Hiromi.
Hiromi turns around, takes off her shades, and smiles. "Yes, yes." Aki: "Um..." Takuma and the others have also followed them out. Seems Hiromi remembers Takuma. "You're Futomaki's um..."
Takuma: "I'm Mizuguchi... Thank you for the meal, we really enjoyed it." The girls also thank her. Hiromi: "Oh, it's okay. Don't mention it. It was such a pleasant atmosphere today, I had fun."
But the other customers from the sushi-ten also come to thank her as well. "Thank you for the food!" Hiromi is confused. "Eh?" She looks at the receipt and realizes they charged her for everyone's meals in the sushi-ten, too. "Oh, no... Eh?" Waiter Ito explains: "Uh, since you said 'everyone's meals'..." She quickly recovers, and says, "It's okay. (To the girls) I've been working in this industry since I was your age. Although I've been told I'm stuck up and all..."
Shiori realizing that Hiromi had heard her comment, bows down and apologizes. "I'm so sorry!" The other girls also apologize.
Takuma: "I'm sorry, too. They are still ignorant to the ways of the world. They're from the regions and are gathering to form an idol group. Please, let them give you their greetings."
Hiromi: "Well, it must be some kind of fate that we met here. Let me ask your names."
Aki is about to introduce herself but Shiori beats her to it. "Yes!" She starts her 'self-intro' No Ocean routine in a very energetic loud manner that startles the actress. "We don't have an ocean...!" Hiromi cuts her off. "That'll be fine! People are already staring. So then, I'll go back to my castle."
They thank her again as she leaves and gets in the taxi. But Aki again runs after her and knocks on the cab's window. "Handshake! Handshake!" But Takuma comes and pulls her away. "What're you doing, Amano..."
In her Sodegahama accent, Aki frantically tells Hiromi that she's an ardent fan who had come to Tokyo. Hiromi opens the window and puts out her hand. Aki frees herself from Takuma's hold and grabs Hiromi's hand and shakes it vigorously. "'Shiosai no Memory' was the best! The BEST!"
Hiromi thanks her and leaves Aki with the words, "Someday you and I should hang out together." A star-struck Aki watches the cab bearing Suzuka Hiromi disappear into the night, and utters, "So cool~..." She looks around and realizes the others have already upped and left...
(1. "Saba Idol" or "SabaDoru" = 'Saba' comes from 'sabayomi' meaning to change figures, like age, height, weight for personal benefit; And of course there was the drama, 'SabaDoru' starring AKB48's Watanabe Mayu)
(2. Hakata Hanamaru = part of comedy duo Hakata Hanamaru-Daikichi; Sorry, I don't know the context of his quote or who is Hakata referring to, but he IS from Fukuoka, so surely he's not referring to himself)
