Ep. 6: "We'll help you, Online Dating, Sakura Love"

Episode Synopsis. A lovely but seemingly embarrassed woman comes to Tada Benriken. She introduces herself as someone who works as a "Sakura" (someone who poses as a customer to lure other customers) at an online dating site. She says she has been deceiving a certain customer for the past five years. "He has spent over 10 million yen at the website... I feel so guilty." She wants to meet him so she could apologize in person. However, he refuses to see her. "And I don't know his real name and address," she says. "Please find him so I can meet this person!"

Drama Notes:
"Sakura." It's a term used for a person whose job is to pose as a customer to lure or encourage other buyers to buy a product or avail of a service. It could be a fake customer at a sales demo, a hired applauder at a theater, or a fake bidder at an auction. In modern times (as tackled in this episode), a user in an online dating site, thinks he is corresponding with a real person but may actually be a "sakura" (could be a man or woman) who is assuming a fake identity.

About the story. Director One Hitoshi explains, "Episode 6 is based on the story I heard from Yashiki Kenji-kun who helped me with the script. After reviewing all the scripts chosen from the original Mahoro book along with original drama stories, I thought they were all targeting a bit towards older audiences. So I wanted to have a little naughty story with a young pretty girl for younger audiences. Yashiki-kun actually worked as a Sakura in an online dating company for a while... Yashiki-kun also heard there was someone who spent about 10 million in 4-5 years using online dating service."

About the filming. This episode was filmed last year towards the end of the sakura blooming season. One says, "In this story, "sakura" (cherry blossoms) was the key word. When we were filming, it was cherry blossom season so we wanted to take a nice picture with it. However, (guest actress) Usuda Asami-chan’s schedule wasn't open so we couldn't film during full bloom. If you look closely, you’ll see lots of leaves (cherry blossom trees become leafier at the end of flowering). At that night, (Usuda's character) Misaki spilled her life story. We took some time to film that long sequence. Since it was Asami-chan acting in this part, I thought her lines will not sound too cruel and hateful. I didn't think of any social message like social disparity or anything like that. This drama is not about any poetic justice. It’s not deceiving woman = bad woman. I wanted to leave it in gray."

Table Breaker. If you're wondering what the old video game Tada and Gyoten have in their office, it's called "Table Breaker." It was made by Nichibutsu or Nippon Bussan, the company's 1978 debut product. It was a clone of Atari's "Breakout."
