Ep. 10: "Smoke-Cured Mackerel and Sweet Egg Omelet of Jūjō, Kita Ward"


Episode Synopsis. On a cold day, Inogashira is in Jūjō, looking for a certain shop that sells lanterns. Despite the weather, he orders an icy concoction from a sweets shop called "Darumaya." Then, later on, a sudden hunger strikes Inogashira, abruptly cutting off his meeting with a lantern store owner and goes off in search of a place to eat. As he scours the shops along Jūjō's shopping districts, he finally stops in front of a tavern... The eye-catching red lantern hanging in front of it says "Taya..."

Jūjō, Kita. A working class neighborhood known for its number of shopping districts. Acc. to MustLoveJapan: "The name "Jujo" comes from the name of a traditional Japanese measurement of land area (...) There are over 200 shops in Jujo Ginza, Fushimi Ginza and other shopping areas around Jujo Station." The vaudeville theater, Shinohara Engeijo, can also be found here.

Taishu Engeki. Known as "Pop Theater" or traveling tropes that constantly travel and perform all over Japan. In this episode, it featured posters of one of Japan's most popular traveling tropes, the Kiryu-za Koikawa Gekidan. Above pic is one of its actors, Koikawa Jun (2nd Generation).

Shōten. One of Japan's longest running shows (since 1966), it airs every Sunday and features rakugo artists competing against one another with their best jokes. Every time one of them gives what is deemed to be the funniest jokes, he is rewarded with a cushion (handed by Yamada-kun, above pic in red kimono) to sit on. The first one who reaches ten cushions wins. Meanwhile, cushions of the one with the lamest jokes will be deducted. To watch a clip, click here.

Kiritanpo. A traditional cuisine of Akita. Acc. to wiki, "Freshly cooked rice is pounded until somewhat mashed, then formed into cylinders around wooden skewers, and toasted over an open hearth. It can then be served with sweet miso or used as dumplings in soups."

Tonburi. A delicacy of Akita Prefecture, these are seeds of the Bassia scoparia, a type of shrub. It is called "Caviar of the Land" because of its texture. In this episode, it is mixed together with shirasu, or baby sardines.

Inaniwa udon (2nd Pic). A product of Akita, it is a finer and smooth type of udon noodles, yet with a chewy, elastic texture. It is made using the old technique of stretching by hand. (info/pic: akitaok)

"Too many captured pieces..." Goro-san's Shogi lines may be a tribute to The Ladies Professional Shogi-player's Association of Japan (LPSA). Their headquaters is located in Nakazato, Kita Ward.
