Ep. 10: "We'll help you tie the Mahoro JK friendship"

Episode Synopsis. "I want you to find the girl who killed her old man..." The young gangster boss has told Tada. "I just want her cellphone... There are some stuff in there that could get us in trouble." Tada is tasked to search the room of the girl who has since fled. In order to find clues for the girl's whereabouts, he asks his cop friend to let him get inside the scene of the incident... Meanwhile, Gyoten is once again looking after the pretty teen. He notices that even when she claims she feels sad and worried for her missing friend, she seems somewhat nonchalant about it...

Drama Notes:

Serigaya Park.
"The park featured in this drama (where the characters were seen jogging in ep1) is Serigaya Park in Machida. The public art/fountain shows a kinetic sculpture with "arms" that rotate as they get filled with water. The area is also the location of the Machida Museum of Graphic Arts.

The story. According to Director One, Eps. 9 and 10 are taken from "Jitsu wa, Hitotsu", one of the several stories from the first book that was adapted for TV. "When I read the book, I thought I can use this on TV with little dramatization. A story with DV can get really serious and can be depressing so I really did not want to film it. However, I also wanted to bring in some serious tone to the world of the "lazy and comical Tada Benri-ken" to refreshen the atmosphere... With the story involving murder and crime, it portrays the side that does not sound like Mahoro. I also kept in mind to leave the "pop" air that this drama has, while filming."

JK Cafes.
High school themed cafes can be found in places in Tokyo, featuring JKs (joshi kokosei) or high school girls as café attendants. They are allowed to operate but unfortunately some also serve as
front for girls bars. Director One says, "That high school girl café in (episode 9) was, not sure if it's still there, is an actual shop in Machida (where Mahoro is filmed). Right around the time we were filming this drama (Spring 2012), it was popular in Shibuya and Akiba (Akihabara) areas and there were a few in Machida, too... During our location hunting, we saw some high school girls handing out some flyers after school. So I asked "what kind of store is it?" That's how I learned that such shops existed. It's not illegal at all. Just like in the drama, during the day time, it was a high school café, then at night, it runs as a girls' bar. When several of us went there to investigate, while at the café, those girls act as professionals and talk like they're following some kind of manual. We just sat there and listened to them quietly (laughs)."
