Ep. 8: "Taking charge of the disposal of a handgun"

Episode Synopsis. Tada is in a serious mood. He is telling Gyoten that they will have to move out of their office building someday since it will be torn down soon. "By that time, I'm not sure if I can continue being a Benri-ya..." Just then, there was a knock on the door. It was the owner from a nearby bento shop. He has brought with him his morose-looking, childhood friend who happens to be a member of a Yakuza gang. They show Tada an item wrapped in brown paper. Tada looks at it and realizes what it is and vehemently refuses to accept it. "But we don't know what else to do," the bento vendor implores him. "Please take this gun and get rid of it!"

Drama Notes:

Golgo 13.
The longest-running manga still in publication. It's about a professional assassin who goes by the names "Golgo 13" and Duke Tongo. Not much is known about his past, and he often uses a customized M16 rifle for his assignments.

The Deer Hunter. A 1978 movie that won major film awards. You can watch the famous Russian roulette scene that poor Shin-chan was referring to in this clip.

Gun laws in Japan.
"It’s almost impossible to get to a gun in Japan, and selling one or owning one is a serious crime. Fire the gun? Possibly life imprisonment. Gun-control laws are taken so seriously that police will pursue a violator all the way to the grave — and maybe beyond..." To read more, go to the article from Japan Times.

Those planes. If you notice (especially in episode 5), sounds of passing planes can be heard during filming. Director One Hitoshi explains, "In that bar scene (Ep. 5) where Kitamura was telling a story behind his birth, we used the setting with the plane noise so loud and we couldn't hear him. And we used subtitles. It worked because Mahoro = Machida (Machida is where the drama is mostly filmed). Machida is near Tachikawa, the location of the Japanese air defense force, and Fussa, the location of the US Airbase (pic above), some days you’ll have planes flying over the town every 5 minutes. However, the town's people seem to be used to it and does not faze them."
