Ep. 5: "Pork and Onion-Garlic Stir-Fry of Hakuraku, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture"

Episode Synopsis. Inogashira visits Kanagawa University in Yokohama City to meet with a client, an eccentric professor and horse enthusiast. He later tries the soft ice cream of the campus' sweets shop, "Chiffon." Afterwards, he checks out the nearby old shopping district in Rokkakubashi wherein he experiences an odd reverie while taking a break inside a quaint coffee shop called "Cafe Bunmei." Strolling through the narrow passageways lined with small stores, he decides to have a meal at "Kitchen Tomo," a shop serving Western-style cuisine...

Drama Notes:
Kanagawa University. Founded in 1928, its nickname is JinDai (thus, the name of the ice cream in the episode).

Rokkakubashi Shopping District. According to alt-japan, this shopping district "retains the ambience of the good old days in the Showa period (1926-1989) and helps to maintain close relationships between neighbors...Adjacent to this shopping mall is a street called "Rokkakubashi Fureai Street," a narrow arcade with various kinds of shops crowded close to one another. Among these are stores that are closely related to daily life, such as fishmongers, butcher shops, grocery shops, clothing stores, ceramics shops, and bag stores."

Yamato Takeru. A legendary somewhat "Arthurian" prince that is said to have lived during the first century.

Siphon Coffee Brewer. Also called "vacpots," and "vacuum coffee brewer." Popular with "coffee nerds." How it works? CoffeeGeek explains: "A vacuum coffee maker works on the principle of expansion and contraction of gases - actually one gas, water vapour - is what allows the device to brew a full infusion style of coffee and filter the grounds efficiently, leaving a generally clean, pristine cup."

Kōdan. A style of Japanese story-telling. Story-tellers usually perform sitting behind a desk or lectern, and using props such as wooden clappers or a fan to mark the rhythm of the recitation.

"Kodoku no Legal." Qusumi's guest for this episode is Asozan Daifunka (real name: Michiaki Aso). He is a trial fanatic, that is, he is an ardent watcher of court trials. This odd comedian/writer sports a beard and long bleached hair and wears a skirt. This is his twitter account: aisozan_daifunka where he tweets his favorite lines from "Kodoku no Gurume." Japan Times made an article about him, too.

"Feed the Coals! Burn!" As you've noticed, when Inogashira eats, his internal monologue is sometimes inspired by the town he is currently in. In this episode, he thinks of a "steam locomotive" while eating. It should be noted that Japan's first steam locomotive (from England) ran on the tracks connecting Yokohama to Tokyo in 1872 (above pic is a depiction of a steam train at the Yokohama port by Utagawa Hiroshige III).
