Ep. 5: "Mystery-Solving Meals Volume"

Episode Synopsis. Nishiki had been tasked to sign books that will serve as prizes for their readers. Jiro wanted to sign autographs too, since after all, he is half of "Himekawa Rosanna". But his signature was turned down and, Nishiki's version of the autograph was deemed feminine and more appropriate compared to his. While Jiro was complaining about it, the doorbell rang. They have a visitor, female high school student, Shimane Asuka (Kizuki Narumi). She introduced herself as a big fan of Himekawa Rosanna. But how did she know the "author" lives there? Not only that, the two men were stunned when later on, she declared, "Himekawa Rosanna is among you!"

"Lady Joker"『レディ・ジョーカー(下)』by Takamura Kaoru [ 高村薫 ] (under Mainichi Shimbun-sha). Jdrama watchers are familiar with this novel. The character of detective Goda Yuichiro was first introduced in Takamura's best-selling novel "Marks no Yama" (1993). Then, Goda went on to tackle the case in "Lady Joker" (1997), said to be inspired by the unsolved kidnapping case known as the Glico-Morinaga incident of 1984. "Lady Joker" was made into a movie in 2004, and as a WOWOW drama in 2013.

"Terrorist's Parasol"『テロリストのパラソル』by Fujiwara Iori [ 藤原伊織 ] (under Kodansha). A best-selling hardboiled 1995 novel, that won the Edogawa Ranpo Award and the Naoki Prize. The protagonist, Shimamura runs a bar called "Gyohei" that sells only liquor and hot dogs. He has a drinking problem and is hesitant about revealing his past. He is suspected of causing a bomb attack in Shinjuku since a liquor bottle with his fingerprints was found in the scene, so he goes to find the truth behind the case. It was made into a drama in 1996 under Fuji TV. In the excerpt read in this episode, it was the scene of two yakuza men, who visited his bar right before the bombing incident. Shimamura nicknamed them, "White Suit" and "Blue Suit". "White Suit" is the boss, and president of a yakuza-front company, while "Blue Suit" is his henchman.

"Gurume Tantei Ryouji"『グルメ探偵りょうじ』by Kato Tadashi [ 加藤唯史 ] (under Nihon Bungeisha). The hero's name is Renjo Ryouji, a foodie who owns and runs a detective agency "Hototogisu", which primarily investigates extra-marital incidents. In between investigation, he would check out B-gourmet stalls and shops, and taste the food. When he doesn't like the taste of a dish, he would often tell or advise the cook on the proper way of making the dish. As for his background, it was revealed that Ryouji is actually an illegitimate son of an owner of a famous Japanese restaurant, which probably explains why the love of food runs in his veins. But prompted by his legal wife, the father cut off ties and support to his mistress and son. Ryoji's mom died, broken and penniless, and so Ryouji has a grudge against his father and his restaurant.

Hot Dogs 「ホットドッグ」
Ingredients (serves 2): Hot dog buns (non-sliced) 2 pieces; Butter 10g; Sausages (or hot dogs) 2 pcs; Shredded cabbage 100g; Butter 10g; Curry powder 1/4 tsp; Salt and Black pepper, Ketchup, Mustard (as appropriate)
Steps:
1) Slice the buns in the middle, and spread butter inside.

Food Stall Yakisoba (Yatai no Yakisoba)「屋台のやきそば」

Ingredients (serves 2):
Steps:
1) Make the chicken stock. Wash well the chicken carcass, and let boil for about 1 minute in boiling water. Wash clean in cold water and chop in pieces. Put the chicken bones in a pot of water. Once it boils, simmer for 30 minutes over low heat while taking out the scum. Add the green part of the green onions, and ginger and simmer for an additional one hour. Finally, turn off the heat, and add flaked bonito (kezuribushi). Once it cools, strain, and take out the bones, etc. (Note: Store the rest of the stock in the freezer for future use)
2) Steam the potatoes the day before, and refrigerate them overnight. Peel and chop into bite-sized pieces. Also chop pork meat, and cabbages into bite-sized pieces.

Ingredients (serves 2): Potatoes 3 pcs; Garlic two pcs; Red chili pepper 1 pc; Olive oil 3 TB; Anchovy 25g; Parsley (as appropriate)
Steps:
1) Boil whole potatoes, and then peel and chop into chunks. (*If possible, boil the potatoes the day before and refrigerate overnight so that when fried, they are less likely to crumble).
2) Heat the olive oil, crushed garlic, and red chili pepper in a frying pan. After the scent comes out, add anchovies.
3) Add the potatoes and stir-fry. Garnish with chopped parsley when done.

Hot Dogs 「ホットドッグ」
(From Fujiwara Iori's "Terrorist's Parasol")
Ingredients (serves 2): Hot dog buns (non-sliced) 2 pieces; Butter 10g; Sausages (or hot dogs) 2 pcs; Shredded cabbage 100g; Butter 10g; Curry powder 1/4 tsp; Salt and Black pepper, Ketchup, Mustard (as appropriate)
Steps:
1) Slice the buns in the middle, and spread butter inside.
2) Cut surface of sausages in diagonal lines. Melt butter in a frying pan, and lightly fry the sausages.
3) Remove the sausages, and set aside. Put shredded cabbage in the same pan and stir. Season with salt, black pepper, and curry powder. Place the cabbages and sausages in the buns.
4) Toast the hot dog buns in the oven range, and add ketchup and mustard.

Chicken Stock: Chicken carcass 1 whole; Water 1.5 liters; Green onions (green parts) as appropriate; Ginger, as appropriate; Flaked bonito 10g
Yakisoba: Steamed noodles, 2 balls; Potatoes 1 pc; Pork meat 100g; Cabbage 100g; Lard 1 TB; Worcestershire sauce 90ml; Chicken broth 20ml; Salt and black pepper as appropriate; Aonori (seaweed flakes) as appropriate; Red pickled ginger, as appropriate
Steps:
1) Make the chicken stock. Wash well the chicken carcass, and let boil for about 1 minute in boiling water. Wash clean in cold water and chop in pieces. Put the chicken bones in a pot of water. 4) When you have loosened the noodles, add the potatoes. Pour in the sauce and mix everything all up. Add salt and black pepper to taste.
