Final Ep. 9: "Farewell kind Shinigami!! Be with me for my final moments"

Episode Synopsis:
After deliberating whether to punish Shinigami No. 413 and his Crow Officer for committing a blunder, the higher-ups decide to let the two off the hook. However, if they commit one more blunder, it would definitely mean termination for both. And unfortunately, their next case is a tough one: An unknown person is set to commit a "mass murder" in a building, which could cause numerous unplanned deaths. Shinigami and his Officer go to this said site, a corporate building of Minoshima Foods, a leading manufacturer of food products. Since it is considered an emergency, they show themselves to the corporate top brass to find the identity of the culprit. The company president, Minoshima Joji (Bengal), his secretary (Ito Yuko) and other top executives gather in the conference room to discuss a mysterious email message that was sent to them. However, they realize it was a ruse to trap them inside the room. Via the monitor screen, the culprit, Nakahira Takeshi (Tanaka Kei), a disgruntled former employee, appears to them, to announce his intentions: he has planted a bomb somewhere in the building and...

Drama Notes:

Final Episode Story. The last episode is based on the final chapter of the manga, "Shinigami Shikkaku no Maki" (Last Chapter, Final Volume 13), published in 1990, ending its 8 year-long run. Differences in the manga: The culprit was a cold-hearted sniper-assassin, about to shoot a beloved foreign peace ambassador, which happens to be a sickly young lady on a wheelchair. Because of her inspiring work, leaders of warring nations are about to sign a peace treaty. A secret organization (that profits from trafficking illegal weapons) paid an assassin to kill her. Shinigami tried to reason with the assasin, but to no avail. He and Kaasuke (the Crow) tried to stop the assassin from pulling the trigger, resulting to Kaasuke getting shot in the process. This is (I think) the only moment we see Shinigami seriously upset and in a dark mood. He even fought back and beat up Akuma (who is of course, rooting for the sniper). He decided to release the sniper of his soul so that the sniper's body becomes immobile. Even so, the sniper was still unapologetic and adamant about his mission and so, his soul asked Akuma to kill the target for him. Shinigami has no choice but to cut off the soul from his body. As a result, it made his wish invalid because Akuma cannot grant wishes of those who are dead. Afterwards, since what he did was a major taboo, Shinigami underwent a trial, with the higher-ups in Heaven deciding what to do with him. The Chief defended him, and cited his past actions of helping numerous humans. They let him go, and in the end, he is reunited with his buddy, Kaasuke, who is still alive, and all patched up. Together, they fly off to their next mission, to continue carrying out their duties as always.

Manga Author Spotlight:
Endo Koichi. Shinigami-kun's creator, Endo Koichi was born in 1956 and hails from Niigata Prefecture. His style is known as "gag comics", and he is more well-known for his work, "
Tsuide ni Tonchinkan", which was turned into an anime series. Regarding the drama series, Shinigami-kun, he said in an interview, "Because it was a work from 30 years ago, I thought I was in a hidden camera prank show, when they came to talk to me about (making a live adaptation drama). This time, Ohno-kun will portray the role, and I thought, 'He's the perfect person, isn't he?' (...) As for his work as the Shinigami, it seems he's doing a perfect job, there are times when it's a bit dangerous (probably referring to the flying scenes), that it seems he doesn't make mistakes, Ohno-kun is good." On any plans for the manga, "When it comes to things like drawing, there's more and more materials, and ideas and stock have been accumulating, I think I want to draw it."

The boy named Akuma. (This is not related to the drama at all but I find it interesting so I'd like to share it with you). I remember there was a case wherein a dad wanted to name his son "Akuma" but the municipal office rejected the name application, resulting to a legal battle that attracted media attention (if you want to read about it, go HERE). This happened in 1993. Guess what year Suda Masaki (Akuma) was born? kekeke.

Sleepy Shinigami. "Honestly, those heaven scenes with Mirei where we’re sitting down are pretty dangerous. It’s warm, that studio, and then with all the lights as well. So that adds to the warmth. So generally, those sitting scenes happen after meals a lot. (laughs) ... I was so sleepy. There’s a scene where all we’re doing is just staring at a fixed point, from heaven down at Earth. There are times where I’m desperately trying to keep my eyes open. I’ll say it already: I’m terribly sleepy in the sitting heaven scenes!" ~ Ohno Satoshi, the sleepyhead dork.
