Episode 4: "God's Choice, Room blocked by fire... What will be the fate of 5 stranded people?"

Episode Synopsis:
Shinigami No. 413 has a troublesome assignment ahead. For some reason, the name of his next Assigned-To-Die human is unknown. The only clue he has is that the person is found in Room 1304 at a hotel, and will die an accidental death in just four hours. When he arrives at the hotel room, he is glad to see only one person there, Yamaguchi Manami (Usuda Asami). No. 413 says his customary greetings to her but unfortunately, another person arrives. It is her boyfriend, Dr. Nagumo Yuji (Hira Takehiro). The couple is planning to spend a romantic night together at the hotel. However, two more people arrive. This time, it is a mother named Takano Yoko (Sato Hitomi) with her toddler son. She asks the doctor to help her son who is suffering from a heart condition and high fever. As soon as they let them in, another person comes, barging in with a bloody knife. He is Sudo Goro (Yasuda Ken), a man who is on the run after stabbing someone. The confused Shinigami does not know anymore who among these five people will be the Assigned one. Just then, they hear a loud explosion. And the hallway outside the room has caught fire...

Drama Notes:

Episode Four Story. This episode is taken from two stories but mostly based on "Kami no sentaku no maki" (Story 6 of Volume 6). The difference in the manga: Akuma-kun did not appear in this manga story. Also, the five people were all in a car, not a hotel room. The couple were driving from a date and picked up the mother and her sick child by the road. Then they were forced to give a fugitive man a ride after he stopped their car and brandished a knife at them. A struggle ensued during the ride, and the car swerves off a cliff. But instead of hitting the ground, time literally stopped, and the car is seen floating in the air. Shinigami-kun appears to them, to tell them that someone in the car will die...

The fujitive man's story about being a "hero" is based on "Hero sensei no maki" (Story 5 of Volume 9). In the manga, a much-loved retired elementary teacher was regarded as a "hero" because he saved the lives of 2 students many years ago. Spoiler Alert! But he admitted to his now-former students that he is a fake "hero" and had asked Akuma-kun to give him courage during those "heroic" feats. The students assured him that he is loved not because he was a hero but because he was a good and kind teacher. Then, their old school building caught fire, trapping some children inside. The teacher ran inside to save them. Akuma-kun appears, asking him if he wants to use his 3rd and final wish. But the teacher refused and saved the kids on his own but died in the process.

Manga Character Highlight: The Chief. Only known as "Chief" or "Shunin" (Senior Staff), a middle manager in the soul-handling office of the spirit world. In the manga, he is depicted as wearing a black hood with a skull-like face, holding a scythe, akin to that of the Grim Reaper of the west. Thus, when he appears to human souls, he is instantly recognized as THE "Shinigami", prompting the lower-ranking, cute little Shinigamis (there are many of them in the manga) to comment, "As expected of the Chief... He's a celebrity indeed." He is often found behind his desk, surrounded by many little Shinigamis who are under him. The Chief is the one who gets annoyed and frustrated with Shinigami-kun and scolds him (and pummels him with a stick) constantly for breaking the rules. Possible Spoiler Alert! However, in the last chapter of the manga, when Shinigami-kun was sent to a trial after committing a major taboo, the Chief was the one who defended him. In the drama, he is portrayed by Matsushige Yutaka.

The Grim Reaper. Death has been depicted as a sentient being throughout the centuries in many societies and culture. In the western world, he is more known as "Grim Reaper" who is depicted as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe and clothed in a black cloak with a hood." Shinigami-kun in the drama and manga, however, is more like a "psychopomps" (from the Greek word psuchopompos, literally meaning the "guide of souls"). These are "creatures, spirits, angels, or deities in many religions whose responsibility is to escort newly deceased souls to the afterlife. Their role is not to judge the deceased, but simply provide safe passage. Frequently depicted on funerary art, psychopomps have been associated at different times and in different cultures with horses, Whip-poor-wills, ravens, dogs, crows, owls, sparrows, cuckoos, and harts."
