earth_colorsI got more Amachan Trivia Notes, courtesy of "The Amachan Unofficial Data Book" made by a fan of the asadora. "There's more?!" Well, since some of you requested for more trivia... and since there's many more interesting background stuff behind the dialogue lines (that I had no idea about), plus they're really fun so... The Data Book also cleared up some lines I was confused about, so I updated the subs now (not yet 100% accurate but fairly better than the first ones I posted orz). So those who are keeping Amachan in their rewatch list or permanent shelf, it maybe a quite a bother but do please download the updated subs again to replace the old ones you have...
A few of these notes I chose are speculations by fans, not really confirmed by the staff. Others shed more sense, while some maybe mere coincidences spotted by overzealous fans. :D
Alright here we go for the 2nd Batch Notes Part 1:
Music references. Some scenes used as background music (or BGM) came from other shows:
Inscrutable Battle. OP music from "Dai Kaizou Gekiteki!! Before/After" (Dramatic Makeover!! Before-After), an extreme home makeover show from TV Asahi, by composer/pianist Matsutani Suguru. It was used as the BGM during the tearing down of the old fishery co-op to transform it into the Ama Cafe (Ep. 56).
Takumi (video above). Still from the said show. It is the "Before and After" music played while they're showing the results of the home makeover. It was used when Aki was showing Haruko the new Ama Cafe (Ep.57).
Galaxy Express 999. The theme song of the movie version of anime, Galaxy Express 999 (1979). The original song (listen here) was sung by Godiego. It is used as BGM of the running KitaTetsu (Ep. 53).
Asano-san no Bento. In Ep. 116, after the OP credits, when Suzuka Hiromi met Natsu at Burai Sushi, and she (Hiromi) is a bit irked off by Daikichi. The BGM music playing was taken from Akane-san no Bento, a 1981 TBS drama, that starred a very young Sugimoto Tetta (Daikichi). Watch a clip here.
Pop Cultural References to Dialogue Lines:
"You want to turn into a wax doll?" In Ep. 15, when Anbe was insisting to make Mamebu a featured specialty during the K3NSP meeting and Sugawara butted in about his diorama, Daikichi said it in a deep scary voice, "Omae mo rōningyō ni shite yarou ka? (You want me to turn you into a wax doll, too?)." That line is from the 1986 heavy metal song "Rōningyō no Yakata (House of Wax)" by Sekima II and Daikichi was only copying the singer's style of singing.
Yayoi's naughty joke. Okay, this is a bit nsfw but still, I loled nevertheless when I finally found out the ridiculous naughty joke behind this line. In Ep. 20, When Yayoi was telling Haruko (about not allowing Hiroshi to woo Aki), she said, "Based on my experience, a girl dives better when she has a boyfriend." Haruko: "Stop it, stop with your naughty joke." Apparently, there's this notion that when you lose your virginity to your boyfriend, your hymen breaks, the "air" goes out, therefore you sink better. There! Let that sink in for now... *cricket sounds* orz
Chuube and Natsu's date. Aki asked Chubee where they went on a date (Ep. 32). Chubee said they ate at Chiharu. In reality it is probably based on a popular ramen shop in Kuji called "Chigusa." Then, they rented a dvd copy of a movie at "Tatsuya" which is of course, hinting on the popular Japanese chain of video rental shop, "Tsutaya."
"Oishuu gozaimashita..." In the "Santa Claus" episode (Ep. 44), when Masamune thanked Natsu, "Unidonburi, ara shiru, mamebu shiru, oishūgozaimashita (Unidonburi, fish soup, and mamebu soup were delicious)." It's from the suicide note of a Tsuburaya Kōkichi, a marathon athlete who competed in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where he won a bronze medal. Before he took his own life in 1968, he wrote to his parents, "Mikka tororo oishuu gozaimashita (The mikka tororo was delicious)." This line has been quoted in dramas and anime since then.
Iwate Kocchakoi TV. It is based on a real studio called Iwate Menkoi TV.
JJ Girls. Name is also probably based on a real four girl group of the 90s called "CC Girls."
"Burnt out like white ash..." The Ama-sans, all tired out in Ep. 53 after making 300 unidon, "were burnt out like white ash". It's a famous quote from "Ashita Joe", a wish ("To burn so bright... all that'll be left are white ashes") that was sadly fulfilled in his last bout.
Ume-san. It is said to be taken from a sushi chef character Umesaburo Sagawa or Ume-san (left pic) from the manga/anime, Dokonjo Gaeru.
And speaking of Ume-san, fans say that in Ep. 81, when Suzuka Hiromi realized that the "Jo Jo!" she's been uttering is from the 80s manga JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, actor Pierre Taki (Ume) reportedly made an adlib behind the counter and did a slight JoJo's pose (second pic) which appear to be some sort of jazzy, dramatic poses... um, think along the lines of Madonna's "Vogue".

Hanging Bell Cave. Mentioned in Ep. 105 by Anbe, saying it's one of the things she misses about Sodegahama. Tsuriganedo (or Hanging Bell Cave) is one of the scenic spots in Rikuchu Kaigan National Park, Kosode Coast which Sodegahama is based on. It used to have "a bell-shaped rock hanging from the top. Unfortunately,the rock fell during the Tsunami of 1896, and only the cave remains today."

"Grandpa, your dentures stink~!" In Ep. 128, Futomaki said this line while asking Aki not to grimace when she does the kissing scene with Bangs-Wriggly Guy. This line is from an 1989 Polident commercial, featuring a cute kid telling his grandpa that his dentures stink.
Sukeban Deka. In Ep. 76, when coffeeshop owner Kai-san asked Young Haruko if she got the part of a Sukeban who fights with a yoyo... He was probably referring to "Sukeban Deka," a manga turned TV series and movie, of the 80s. It's about a yoyo-wielding delinquent girl detective. The first TV series came out in 1985 so the time period in this episode checks out.
"Stop mumbling like you have no back teeth!". In Ep. 144, Haruko irritatingly tells Mizuguchi to speak up and stop mumbling "like you have no back teeth!". "No back teeth" is a reference once again to Ryuhei's late dad, Matsuda Yusaku who according to legend, had his back molars taken out to achieve a hollowed cheeks appearance for the movie, "Yajū Shisubeshi" or "The Beast to Die." According to ja.wiki (translated by danburi), "Main actor Matsuda Yusaku requested to "give him some time to prepare for this part" and stopped communication with the staff for a while. During that time Matsuda had lost more than 10kg of his weight (When he was weighed in, his weight was down to 62 kg). In addition, to make it look hollow cheeked, he had a total of 4 molars pulled out. There is an anecdote story about, when the director Murakami Tooru saw Matsuda in that state, after almost a month of disappearance, he got very angry and both started heated arguments over it."
Other personalities or references mentioned:
Nakagawake Brothers. In Ep. 64, when the Ama-sans are practicing for the Ama Sonic, Katsue was wondering which way is "house right." Yayoi says it is to the side of the younger brother of the sibling comedy duo, Nakagawake (Pic 1 above). She was referring to Nakagawake Reiji (younger and taller bro) who stands on the right side (of the viewer's perspective) while older bro Tsuyoshi stands on the left.
Osugi. When Aki says she saw Osugi-san wear the same black outfit as Suzuka (Ep. 82)... Osugi (Pic 2 above) is a movie critic and likes to wear black, too.
"Tu~s!". Also in Ep. 82, when Suzuka asks Aki several questions, including about "Tu~s!", it apparently is a gag popularized by Kasuga (Pic 3 above) of the comedy duo Audrey.
Ep. 113. When Aki came home from a guesting at a TV variety program special, Haruko rapidly asks her several questions:
"Did Shinagawa pick the line for you? Did Shoji show off his body to you?" Referring to the duo Shinagawa Shoki Shinagawa Hiroshi (the talkative member of the duo) and Shoji Tomoharu (who brags/show off his built body).------------------
And these are some Notes I previously wrote in the Summaries. I'm reposting some of them here if some of you don't have the patience to read or go through the Summaries:
Shiosai. The novel which "Shiosai no Memory" is based on. It is a 1954 novel made into several movie versions. About the bonfire scene, I asked danburi about this and this is how it went: Hatsue and Shinji had agreed to meet up at a shack. It began to rain, he arrives first and falls asleep by the fire; He wakes up to see her naked, drying her clothes; She asks him to do the same so it won't feel too embarrassing that she's the only one naked; Then, she asks Shinji to "Come to me, jump over the fire or I will..." He does it and they um embrace but nothing happens even if they're naked lol but instead promise to wait until they are married.
Comaneci Gag. Also in Ep. 83, when they say "Dasa-Dasa", they make the Comaneci Gag, "V-gesturing" down one's groin area, emphasizing that part of Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci's leotard; a gag popularized by Beat Takeshi a long time ago. Isono-sensei also did it in Ep. 46.
"Yoitomake's Song" by Miwa Akihiro. Sung by Yayoi in Ep. 62. Yoitomake means day laborer, that is why Yayoi is making 'heave-ho' gestures while singing.
Spartan X and Project A. Both Jackie Chan movies from the 80s, mentioned by Daikichi in Ep. 47. That's why, Yoshida says, Daikichi "belongs to the Jackie Chan generation."
Kuroso. Black vinegar believed to be a health tonic drink. Mentioned in Ep. 63.
AmeJo Hakkenden. The top 8 members of AmeJo were nicknamed by fans as "AmeJo Hakkenden." A reference to "Nansō Satomi Hakkenden", which is a tale of 8 Guardian Dogs.
GMT's Former Group Names:
No Ocean. "We don't have an ocean but we do have a dream!" Leader Shiori is from Saitama and her former group was called "No Ocean" since Saitama is landlocked and so it has "no ocean."
Whirlpool 7. Ayumi who hails from Tokushima, belonged to the group "Whirlpool 7". It is named after the Naruto whirlpools, which are "tidal whirlpools in the Naruto Strait, a channel between Naruto in Tokushima and Awaji Island in Hyōgo, Japan" ~wiki
Ushi Tongue Girls (Beef Tongue Girls). Onodera-chan's local idol group. Sendai is the beef capital of Japan, and beef tongue is one of their popular delicacies.
Oyafuko Dolls. The name of Mana-chan's hometown Idol group. "Oyafuko" is a famous street in Fukuoka, that teems with shops and clubs. In Ep. 69, Mizuguchi was explaining about the groups he has recruited so far and in the anime drawn by Tekken, "Oyafuku Dolls" were dressed up in the costumes of local delicacies: pork ramen, cod roe, yuzu pepper, Niwaka crackers.

In Ep. 63, when the guys heard that Haruko cried after watching "Shiosai no Memory" they couldn't believe that the former Sukeban and "so-called cold-blooded woman of the North" could shed tears. Sugawara said, "THE Haruko who didn't cry even when riding in fast cars, doing sudden spins?" It is a line (lyrics here) from Nakamori Akina's 1984 song, "Kazari janai no yo namida wa (Tears are not for decoration)".
LeSqua. In Ep. 76, In Haruko's retelling of her young life in Tokyo, she wrote that that Young Futomaki ordered "Reska" or "LeSqua" the first time in Coffee Shop Idol. It is the Showa nickname for the drink, lemon squash (lemon juice and soda water). Other outdated nicknames are "ReiKo" short for ice kohi (iced coffee); and "KuriSo" or cream soda.
