After Mahoro....

I know it's highly unusual for me to be promoting something other than stuff that I sub. But I can't help it...
After Mahoro, I can't help feeling withdrawal pangs. *sobs~Tadaaah~Gyo~ten*
So I've been stalking checking and finding out what our two boys have been up to lately.
As of now, Eita is busy doing a stage play...
While Matsuda Ryuhei is starring in a much awaited movie that's gonna be shown tomorrow in Japan.
Directed by Ishii Yuya, "Fune wo Amu" (Assemble the boat) or "The Great Passage" (its official English title) is based on the award-winning novel by "Mahoro" author, Miura Shion-sensei-chan.

Aside from the remarkable Ryuhei, it stars Odagiri Joe, Kobayashi Kaoru, and Miyazaki Aoi.
Matsuda plays a nerdish, socially-awkward man who was working at a sales department of a book publishing company when he got entrusted with helping out in editing and compiling a new dictionary. He may have an uncanny knack for lexicography but is at a loss for words when he's faced with his landlady's daughter (Aoi). Looks like an intelligent light comedy with a bit of romance thrown in.
So for those, like me who still can't let go of "Mahoro", here's something we can look forward to.

My Condolences...

市川森一
Ichikawa Shinichi

(1941-2011)

I was surprised to learn that Japanese screenwriter Ichikawa Shinichi had just passed away due to cancer at age 70. He was also a novelist, commentator, and playwright. I had just translated his last work, "Chouchou-san" so his writing and words are still fresh in my head. As I was going over the subs and translating them into English (with the help of danburi), I couldn't help admire the intelligent and meticulous way he incorporated historical facts into his script. And I especially liked the poem he wrote for Chouchou-san's last words. He will surely be missed. Japan has indeed lost a great and prolific writer. Kokorokara okuyamimoshiagemasu.

On My Watchlist: 2 movies and a drama

DONE WATCHING:

Kimi ni Todoke (2010 live action movie)
I tried to read the manga... couldn't get past the first 2 chapters since the art was just lousy and the story seemed uninteresting. I tried to watch the anime and couldn't get past the 1st ep - because it just mirrors the manga. But then the manga is still on-going, so there's more to the story, I guess. But for me, it's like reading - more like plodding through- the diary of a teen in love. Riiigghht. *yawns* And yet I am puzzled as to why this story has captured the attention of many people - mostly I presume, teen girls and the hopeless romantics. Maybe I'm too jaded about HS love story dramas. But then, I still went ahead with the movie. And as expected - no major plot, just a simple problem of 'how can I get my feelings across to you...' and resolving some issues about HS gossip, and then the end. Tabe Mikako captured the manga character perfectly, and Haruma Miura has indeed the looks of a HS heartthrob. But still it wouldn't make me want to know the rest of the story.

Crying Out with Love from the Center of the World (2004 movie adaptation)
After watching the drama, I also checked out the film adaptation which came out first. There are many differences from the drama, mainly that in the movie, the story focused more on the teen couple, Saku and Aki, while families and friends were hardly shown. The story of course is more fast-paced and less dramatic and drawn-out than the TV version. Nagasawa Masaki portrayed Aki as a cool, flirtatious girl while Moriyama Mirai's portrayal of Saku was less passionate than Yamada Takayuki's but more naturally convincing.

Kabe Onna Yama Onna (Fuji TV, 2007)
'Wall Woman, Mountain Woman' is a comedy about two women with huge differences in breast sizes... Honestly, this drama helped me get through a depressing week. Nothing like a cheesy, fun, silly, sexist comedy to lighten up your mood. Despite some rude, unnecessary (for me but I'm sure not for the men watching) close-up shots of cleavages, I enjoyed it immensely. Just don't take this drama seriously, and you'll be fine. It's my first time to have watched Fukada Kyoko (Marie) in a drama, I think she managed to pull off such a lovable ditzy role of a 'Mountain Woman.' And so goes for Ito Masaki (Megumi), too, who was tagged as the 'Wall Woman.' She wore a lot of white outfits in this drama - those white pants definitely looked great along with her tall slender frame *green with envy*. I miss Nishima Hidetoshi (Iguchi) from "Real Clothes" and I'm glad to see that he was here, too... which reminded me to go and watch 'SCHOOL!!' already since he was recently in that drama as well.

NEXT ON MY WATCHLIST:

Koukou Kyoushi (TBS, 1993)
SCHOOL!! (Fuji TV, 2011)

On My Watchlist: 'crying out love...'

Watching right now: "Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu" (2004) or 'Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World"

Just finished the 10th ep...

The first time I saw a scene from this drama was a dubbed version on TV years ago. I chanced upon a girl (Aki) reading her speech in the rain in front of her teachers and classmates. Not knowing what it was about, I remember finding that scene as strange and kinda masochistic in a way, that I couldn't help blurting out, "That HAS to be a Japanese drama." And yes, I was right...

I didn't watch it then... but I'm watching it now. For a drama, I'm amazed at how well-crafted it was - obviously and meticulously done with much love and care by its director and staff. It was almost cinematic - hell, it's even much better made than the crappy JP movies I've seen so far.  But towards the end... it had begun to drag... it kinda reminded me of that Seinfeld episode of Elaine watching "The English Patient," and shouting at the moviehouse: ".... Just die aleady!... DIE!"

Young lovers played by Yamada Takayuki and Ayase Haruka

Shot in scenic Matsuzaki, Shizuoka Prefecture

One of the BFFs portrayed by Tanaka Kotaro (I'm such a sucker for guys with cute smiles) :)

When it came to tearful scenes, I didn't get emotionally drawn as I did with "1 Liter of Tears." The actors did a great job though... with wonderful, idyllic shots of the town of Matsuzaki, Shizuoka. I certainly do acknowledge it as possibly one of the best-made jdramas of all time.

I plan to watch the 2004 movie version after this since it stars Murai Moriyama, one of the actors that I just love to death. :)

Subber's Diary entry#9: Unwinding on a sunday

22 May 2011

Took a break from subbing and gave myself some 'me' time. :)

Cool bath, a light snack, did my nails while listening to the rain outside my window.

And of course, watching some jdramas that don't have anything to do with me subbing them...

I just finished watching the 1980-81 classic drama, 'Kita no kuni kara.' Thanks to Chuks' subs.  I love these series, it will always be one of my favorites... with its haunting theme song forever embedded in my mind. And I'm glad there are still the SPs to look forward to.

I <3 love "Kita no Kuni Kara..."

Among the newer dramas, I'm watching "Marumo no Okite."  The talking dog was the come-on for me, made me curious to see what it's all about. I'm still on ep 2, but it's beginning to become apparent that the dog wasn't needed at all - obviously just inserted as an afterthought and to boost the ratings. I can imagine what went on during the producers' meeting : "It's about a single guy who adopts two kids of his dead best friend." "Is there a dog in it?" "No..." "Then put one in, it would look good on the poster." "But there's already another family drama with a dog." "I don't care, make it a talking dog for all I care, just put a friggin dog in it!" Dog-related stories are trending now in Japan, as shown by the strong ratings garnered by "Deka Wanko" last season.  Well, we'd better enjoy it til it lasts, since next season, we'll be inundated to the brink of vomit with a lot of 'cross-dressing' dramas - Ouran, Hana Kimi 2, etc. Honestly, I prefer to watch a talking dog than a bunch of Horikita Maki wanna-bes all vying for a piece of the golden pie called 'ratings'.
