Ichiro Ep6: Drama Notes

Episode 6: "The Two Heads of Houses"

Episode Synopsis. Ichiro (Nagayama Kento) and company managed to go over the perilous path of Wadatoge. However, the setbacks they encountered caused a big delay in their schedule, so they hurry on to regain lost time. They reach the post town of Iwamurada but while the party are resting, the funds for the journey are suddenly stolen. Without it, the procession cannot proceed forward. Ichiro knows the culprit is the unidentified man who had slipped among them with the aim of disrupting the procession. He goes to a local merchant to borrow money... Sensing Ichiro's plight, Sakyonodaibu (Watanabe Dai) pays a visit to the local feudal lord, Naito Shimanokami (Hamada Tatsuomi), in order to see if he too, can help resolve the situation. But Shimanokami is still 17 years old, and has a stubborn personality... Meanwhile back home, Shogen's men are attempting to abduct Kaoru (Matsuura Miyabi) in order to force her father Shichizaemon (Ishiguro Ken) to surrender the merchant who is testifying against Shogen (Sano Shiro)...

Drama Notes:

Seki [関]. As explained in nakasendoway, a seki is a barrier or inspection station whose aim is for security purposes, namely: to see if samurai women, especially from feudal lords' families are being smuggled outside Edo, and to check for suspicious weapons. These barriers are closed at 6 pm so if a traveler is late, he may have to spend the night outside or retreat back to the nearest post town. The barrier keeper is called a seki-mori [関守]. "These barriers were indeed intimidating places, and served constantly to remind travelers of the supreme power of the shogunate authorities." Above pic is that of Kiso-Fukushima seki, found along the route of Kiso-Kaido, as depicted by Hiroshige.

Iwamurada post town [岩村田宿]. It is the 22nd of the 69 post stations of the Nakasendo. Presently, it is part of the city of Saku, in Nagano Prefecture. It was originally a castle town of the Iwamurada Clan. In this episode, after passing Wadatoge, Ichiro and company went past the barrier gate at Wada and five other post towns before finally stopping to rest at Iwamurada.

Young lord Naito. The character of Naito Shimanokami is based on the real life young feudal lord of that time, Naito Masanobu of Iwamurada Clan of Shinano province. He became lord in 1860 at age 15, and became the last lord of his clan since the shogunate system was abolished in the Meiji Restoration. And just in case you don't know, actor Hamada Tatsuomi who portrayed the young lord, is the young child actor from the live action drama, "Kaibutsu-kun".
